The companionship of animals has always been part of my life. Growing up in the countryside our dogs, Kimmy & Lady - Rough Collies & Tramps a Lab/Alsatain cross were apart everyday life and my best friends. For the last five years I've regularly looked after friends' dogs, so I have become accustom to the different rhythms a dog can have, the ones who want a good long walk to settle, the ones who just want you near, the ones who take a little longer to trust a new face and the ones who don't. There's a particular kind of trust that builds slowly over time with an older animal too, a language of small signals, and a practice of paying real attention, which one learns to read. I've also shared my home with cats for most of my adult years, two of whom lived a good life all the way to 21 and 23, so I'm well practiced with the needs of aging pets generally, not just dogs. Right now I share my home with a 12 year old moggie/Norwegian Forest cat, who came to me as a rescue at six and settled beautifully once he felt safe. So I know what it is to live alongside family pets who have their own mind, their own rhythm, and their own way of letting you in. Whether it's a puppy full of energy or an old soul who moves a little slower these days, I meet each animal as they are. No rushing, no forcing, just quiet attentiveness and the kind of care I'd want for my own.
