Safety, trust & environment

I prioritize keeping pets safe, comfortable, and consistent with their normal routines. I am comfortable walking dogs on leash using either a harness or collar, and I also utilize fenced-in yards when available. I follow each pet’s specific care instructions closely, including feeding schedules, medications, and behavioral preferences. I am also comfortable with crate training and crating when needed, as I’ve used crates with my own pets. In a client’s home, I treat the space with respect and maintain a calm, clean, and structured environment so pets feel secure and at ease.

Information Susan H. would like to know about your pet

It is always helpful to know important details about your pet ahead of time so I can provide safe, consistent, and personalized care. This includes routines, feeding instructions, medical needs, allergies, behavioral traits, and any triggers or comfort preferences. The more I know about your pet’s personality and habits, the better I can ensure a calm and positive experience while you’re away.

A typical day

I tailor activities to each pet’s personality and energy level. For dogs, that can include enriching walks, relaxed neighborhood strolls, sniff-focused outings, and play sessions that keep them mentally and physically engaged. For more playful pets, I enjoy fetch, enrichment games, and positive interaction that keeps them stimulated and happy. For cats, I focus on interactive play, enrichment toys, and gentle attention that matches their comfort level. My goal is always a calm, fun, and stress-free experience that feels like a staycation, not a disruption.

Pet care experience

I've shared my life with dogs and cats for as long as I can remember, and caring for animals has always been one of the greatest joys in my life. Growing up, I had a shy Chow Chow and a mischievous Cocker Spaniel named Nigel who kept life interesting. As an adult, I raised a Golden Retriever from puppyhood through his senior years. His favorite daily adventure was racing to the mailbox. I also had the pleasure of caring for an English Mastiff for five years whose personality was every bit as big as he was. Most unexpectedly, I rescued the love of my life on a dreary Friday afternoon at work, and my heart has been firmly claimed by rescue dogs ever since. My experience includes puppies, senior dogs, and pets who need a little extra patience, attention, or specialized care. I understand that every pet has their own personality, routine, and comfort level, and I take the time to make sure they feel safe, happy, and loved while you're away. I've also cared for multiple cats throughout my life, from energetic kittens to senior companions. I've lived with both short- and long-haired cats, as well as cats ranging from outgoing social butterflies to those who prefer to take their time warming up to new people. I'm on Rover because I genuinely love animals, and I know life gets busy. Whether you're working long hours, traveling, or simply juggling everything life throws your way, your pet still deserves attention, affection, exercise, and consistency. My goal is to be that reliable person you can trust to care for them when you can't be there. I have a flexible schedule and will do my best to accommodate your pet's needs and routine. Whether that's an early morning walk, a midday check-in, evening companionship, or extra visits while you're away, I'm happy to work with you to create a schedule that helps both you and your pet feel comfortable. Whether your pet is looking for a walking buddy, a playmate, a cuddle companion, or simply someone dependable to keep their routine on track, I'll care for them the way I'd want someone to care for my own, with patience, kindness, and lots of love.

Susan watched my new puppy and senior dog for a weekend when I was out of town and she did great giving my senior pup her medications, making sure the puppy went outside frequently enough that there weren’t any accidents, and she was great taking them on walks (even though the puppy is still not great on a leash!). I would recommend her to anyone!

Susan is an attentive and compassionate caregiver. She has a love for all animals that is reflected in how she interacts with other people’s pets; I’ve personally seen both cats and dogs become immediately drawn to her! Any pets under Susan’s care would undoubtedly be in great hands.
