Safety, trust & environment

I prioritize creating a safe environment by paying attention to each pet’s body language and behavior. Through the SPCA, I learned about pet psychology and how to recognize signs of fear or stress, as well as how to use appropriate handling techniques to build trust.

I have known Sophia since 2020 as an undergraduate student and as my graduate student at West Chester University. She was enrolled in several of my courses, including General Zoology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Marine Biology, and Functional Animal Morphology. where she performed exceptionally well and showed herself to be highly intelligent and interested in the material concerning animal biology with specific interest in functional morphology and physiology. Because of her intellectual capability, and interest in animal biology, I took Sophia into my laboratory as an undergraduate research assistant. After completing her undergraduate program, she enter the graduate program at West Chester University at the master’s level in my laboratory. She worked on the morphology and hydrodynamics of phocid and otariid seal control surfaces (e.g., fore and hind flippers). Sophia Sebo has demonstrated her abilities as a career in veterinary medicine. Sophia looked after my dog, Willow, when I had to travel. Willow is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, who is 15 years old. The breed was identified to have a genetic disorder, which develops into a weakness in the spine. As a result the dog had been a paraplegic without the use of her hind legs for the last 10 ½ years. At this time, the dog is also incontinent. Sophia has been willing to take care of the dog despite its handicap. Sophia shows a real love of animals as displayed by the care she is willing to give to this handicapped dog. She has a true interest in taking care of animals. She was able to assist in taking care of a Herman’s tortoise in the laboratory, which had developed a large cyst on foreleg. Together, we were able to nurse the tortoise back to health without any signs that it had the cyst. Her interests in veterinary medicine are wide, and she wishes to work with both large and exotic animals. In summary, Sophia Sebo has been one of the very best students that I have had as an undergraduate or graduate student working in my laboratory. She has a passion for biology, follows through with her research plans, has quantitative skills, and demonstrates independence. She is industrious and has an excellent work ethic. I would very strongly recommend Sophia for a career in veterinary medicine and entrance into veterinary school.
