Pet care experience

Playtime, Companionship, and Love

I am a former rescue shelter manager, a life-long dog owner, and an approved Wake SPCA foster caregiver. I’m comfortable caring for puppies & kittens through seniors and all ages between. Tips for an optimal match: I accept multiple dogs from multiple families, so pups must be dog-friendly and current on vaccinations. I’m extremely careful about introductions and maintaining a happy, calm, respectful space. We have vigorous friendly quiet play, but no bullying or hierarchy “play.” I do not accept intact adult males (puppies are fine). And I essentially shut down at 5-6 pm to focus on boarders’ dinners, walks, “quiet time” settling before final potty walks/lights out. But I’m a very early riser (by 4 am), so I can accommodate early pickups and drop offs easily, but not nighttime requests.

Sloane is absolutely amazing! Finding someone you trust with your dogs can be tough, but she has completely restored my faith in pet sitters. Bear and Hamilton always come home happily exhausted and clearly well-loved. I feel so at ease leaving them in her hands. Absolutely recommend. Thank you Sloane

Safety, trust & environment

I usually let dogs determine their boundaries within my home. Well-trained dogs have the run of the house and are allowed on beds/furniture IF their owners allow that. I have a large crate available if that is the owner’s wish for overnight care or if necessary due to repeated destructiveness. However, I’m a strong believer in “a tired dog is a well-behaved dog,” so generally dogs are entertained and well-exercised … therefore, well-behaved. I have a wide array of toys, puzzles, and other enrichment activities, which are washed between visitors and replaced as needed (as are all food & water bowls, bedding, and grooming implements).

A typical day

Because of my background in rescue & foster, I appreciate the uniqueness and quirks of every animal and am passionate about providing a positive experience for each animal. I love to stimulate pets physically, cerebrally, and emotionally. A typical day includes a good hike to a park, some play time there, excursions to any pet-friendly places I go, some puzzle time as part of their feedings, frequent play breaks, cuddles and belly rubs. Really, they’re immediately family, and I use my experience to guide what their needs are throughout their day so that it’s a positive experience for both of us. I don’t force long walks when a dog is clearly tired, and I’ll add additional experiences when a dog needs more attention. We usually close the day with some wind-down time with a chewy or a massage or cuddles, whichever best suits the dog (and the owner’s preferences).

I like knowing the usual things like allergies, preference of toy types, anticipated frequency of potty breaks, exercise tolerance. I also like knowing training & behavioral goals so that I can be sure to reinforce them. Working on “leave it,” not jumping, heeling, “soft mouth,” not begging, roll-over, happily entering crate, stay, Canine Good Citizen, etc? Let me know, and I’ll work extra hard on that. My lead photo of a dog at a softball game is a wonderful example of this. The dog struggled with abrupt sounds and movements. After a week of concentrating on *gentle* exposure to more sounds and movements, she could calmly watch and hear all the loud sudden excitement and movements of a live softball game and know that she was completely safe. I LOVE being able to help with these types of things.
