Pet care experience

One on one professional care

Hi, I'm Shelagh (pronounced Shayla)! I started walking and sitting dogs in the DC area in 2016. I currently live with my partner and toddler in Capitol Hill, where we sit one dog at a time. We take dog-child interaction safety extremely seriously, but note I will only watch dogs who have met/interacted with children (street-tested is ok). We have watched over 100 different dogs so far and truly love the experience. We have really seen it all! That said, your animal is unique and we want to know everything about them before we care for them. We often watch dogs who are older, have special needs, do not like to be around other dogs, and/or simply want a luxurious spa vacation away from their human parents. Because of previous experiences being bitten during Rover Meet and Greets, I will not sit any dog who has bit a person at any point in their lives for any reason.

Shelagh was amazing! Took such great care of our pup, excellent communication, and our guy was so happy when we picked him up. 10/10!

We had a wonderful experience with Shelagh while Tessa stayed in her home with her and her family for over a week during Christmas. From start to finish, Shelagh provided a truly personal, attentive, and caring environment. She was thoughtful about Tessa’s individual needs, made her feel at home during a long stay, and treated her like part of the family. Communication was excellent throughout — we received regular updates and felt completely comfortable knowing Tessa was happy and well cared for. It was such a positive, stress-free experience, especially over the holidays. We would absolutely trust Shelagh again and highly recommend her to others.

Shelagh is the absolute best and made sure my dog Lucy was comfortable, happy and active the whole time! Great communication and fun pics really helped my peace of mind while traveling. Lucy is excited to go visit her again!

Schedule

If your dog needs exercise, I am happy to provide it; I have enjoyed running with my clients' dogs so that their humans can come back to a tired and exercised pup. We aren’t ready for a dog of our own (yet!), so working with Rover is really a special treat for me. I am looking forward to meeting your dog!

Safety, trust & environment

Safety is our top priority, especially given we have a child. Food and dangerous hazards are always out of reach for our daughter, and thus for your dog too. I’m a very cautious person by nature. For your dog, that means I always ensure leashes are on correctly and firmly so that they cannot make a getaway. Doors are opened slow and small so your pup cannot get out either !

A typical day

All things! I never tire, so I hope to get your dog the exercise they need. My goal is for you to come back to a tired pup so you can relax and be happy knowing they got some great substantial playtime in with me.

Have they ever bit anyone ? Even provoked, we are not able to watch an animal who has ever bit a person for any reason. If you are unsure of your dog’s history, I cannot be your sitter unfortunately. How often do they need walks? How long of a walk do they and you prefer? What’s your schedule like ? How often do you leave your dog alone? If your dog cannot be left alone for more than 60 minutes, the puppy rate will apply for your booking. Where does the dog sleep overnight? Are they flexible with where they sleep? Do they take medication? Do they eat ok while you are gone? Have they met and interacted with children? Do they get along with other dogs? It’s ok if not.
Each sitter joining Rover needs to pass a background check. And by booking on Rover, you can get photo & message updates, 24/7 support, and reimbursement for eligible vet care.
