For cats, I keep them indoors and make sure they have enough stimulation in their environment. For dogs, it would depend on the weather, the backyard setup, and the specific care that each different individual animal may need.

Schedule
I have my kitten on a timed eating schedule with wet food to help her get all the nutrients she needs. She also has toys for stimulation, and I play with her daily to increase her stamina and decrease pet depression.

I would say that temperament is everything. If they get along with other animals and people as well as any environments that might trigger stressful or defensive responses.
