We originally had a different house sitter for our out-of-state vacation who became very sick during the stay. The original sitter and I agreed I’d need a new sitter to complete the stay. Rover assistance was great and sent my request to many sitters. After many rejections, Samantha stated that she was available and agreed to take on the job. I listed the requirements for the stay in my request on my profile and I provided many written instructions in the house. There were quite a few issues with the stay. Samantha took hours to initially check on my animals which caused some anxiety as I was under the impression she would be heading over to the house quickly to relieve the original sitter. When she did arrive to the house, it was clear by her questions that she did not read any of the written instructions I left for her. She checked on my animals twice a day for less than a full hour each time. I could see the time stamps on my doorbell camera. This is not enough time for them to have sufficient potty breaks, play time, or eating time. Samantha left the dogs for longer than I told her they can wait. I have one dog in particular who can only go 6 hours without using the restroom. Samantha left them alone for 10 hours both days. One of my dogs has to be left in a crate when you leave the house because she gets destructive when she’s bored. So one of my dogs was out of a crate for a total of 2 hours a day, maximum. That is unacceptable and negligent. She also did not take the dogs on their daily walks (stated in the stay request and written instructions), which is very important for their temperament. She did not follow the instructions for feeding my cat. She left the wet food cans and can lids (with sharp edges) on the floor and did not pick them up. The final night of the trip, Samantha messaged me to tell me that one of my dogs was refusing to go to bed and had growled at her. This is extremely unusual for my dog and other sitters have never had this issue. We had a video call and after finding a very high value treat my dog did go to bed. She appeared scared of Samantha. On the final day of the trip, Samantha only needed to come over to do the morning routine for the girls. The girls’ routine happens from 6-8am and Samantha had gotten to the house around 6am for the two days prior. On this day, she wasn’t at the house at the same time so I messaged her. She still wasn’t at the house at 7:30am so I texted again. The dogs were pushing 12 hours in their crates at that point. She finally replied at 8am but by that point I had a family member run over to help them instead. When my partner and I returned home, one of our dogs was acting skittish. We noticed that one of the thick whiskers on her face is bent and broken. She flinched every time we tried to inspect it. We’ll be taking her to the vet tomorrow to make sure that’s all that’s wrong with her. This definitely was not the experience I expected to have or paid for. I would not let her watch my animals again.
