I work from home most days, and my partner Evie also works from home with flexibility, usually going into the office 2 days a week. That means one of us is almost always home during the day. Our routines complement each other too. I tend to go to the gym in the morning while Evie goes in the evening, so there’s always someone at home. Even when one of us has plans, like choir or social commitments, we'd plan around that to make sure a dog is never left alone for long. Walks, meals, and company would easily slot into our daily routines, especially being so close to Pilrig Park and the Water of Leith.

Safety, trust & environment
We live on the top floor of a secure flat building. There’s a closed door to the lift and stairwell, so there’s no risk of a dog running straight out into open railings. Inside, we have a large living space with plenty of room to relax. I work from the spare room and my Evie works in the living room, so there’s always someone nearby and space for a dog to settle comfortably. Our flat is also a sun trap, which our “nephew” Rory the cockapoo loves when he stays with us. There’s space in the kitchen for meals, but we’re equally happy to set up bowls and a blanket in the living room so your dog can stay close to us. When Rory stays, he prefers to sleep near us and often ends up at the foot of the bed, and we’re comfortable with that. If your dog prefers their own bed in a separate room, that’s absolutely fine too. We’ll follow whatever routine makes them feel most at home. We’re also comfortable administering medication if needed. If your dog needs tablets or other medication, we’re happy to follow your instructions carefully to make sure they’re looked after properly.

Information Sam F. would like to know about your pet
If your dog has any phobias or triggers, that’s good for us to know upfront so we can be mindful of them. Rory, our family dog, is generally very relaxed around other dogs, so that’s what we’re most used to, but Evie grew up with terriers who could be a bit feisty at times. So we’re comfortable with different temperaments, we'd just like to know what to expect. It’s also helpful to know how your dog usually behaves around other dogs and people, and how you tend to manage them in those situations. We want to stay consistent with your approach, whether that’s around lead use, boundaries, or socialising with other goals. We'd like to reinforce what you’re already doing, and not confuse them with mixed signals. If there’s any medication, just let us know the details and we’ll build it into the routine. We’re very happy to administer it and make sure it’s handled properly. And generally, any quirks, habits, or things that might seem small but matter to you as the more we know, the better. A bit of a heads up on behaviour, especially if there’s anything out of the ordinary, just helps us make sure your dog feels safe, settled, and understood while they’re with us.
A typical day
In terms of fun activities, we’re pretty active and outdoorsy, so your dog would naturally be part of that. I’m a keen runner, so if they’re happy on-lead, there are loads of cycle paths nearby where they can run alongside me. We’ve taken Rory, our family dog, to Cramond and other beaches before and thrown the ball around for him. We’re not too precious about the car, it can always be cleaned, so beach trips are definitely on the cards if your dog enjoys that. We also like getting out into the Pentlands or any hills. As long as they’re good on-lead around livestock, we’d happily bring them along on longer walks. There are also off-lead dog parks near us if that suits them better. If your dog is sociable and enjoys being out and about, we’ve even taken Rory along to pub quizzes before. If they’re more chilled or prefer quieter routines, that’s absolutely fine too as we can tailor to what they’re comfortable with. We’re big on daily walks and getting outside anyway, so having your dog with us will make that even better. And we’ve got friends with dogs too, so if yours is good around others, there’s the option for a bit of social time as well.

Pet care experience
Hey 👋! We’re Sam and Evie, based in Bonnington Evie owns our flat, so we’re not renting and have full flexibility in how we run our home and care for dogs staying with us. We both work from home (Evie a couple of days a week in the office), which means there’s always someone around. Your dog won’t be left alone for long stretches and will have consistent care and supervision throughout the day. We live right beside Pilrig Park and the Water of Leith, so regular walks in green space are part of our routine. We love getting outdoors and being active, so dogs staying with us get plenty of fresh air, exercise and attention. We’ve looked after family dogs for years, including our “nephew” Rory, a cockapoo who regularly stays with us. Evie grew up with two Cairn terriers. They were lovely house dogs but not easy off the lead and not always comfortable around young children, so she’s very used to being alert outside, managing recall carefully and reading behaviour properly. Between that and Rory, who is very sociable and affectionate, we’ve experienced the full spectrum i.e. from highly friendly dogs to those who prefer their own space. When we lived in Melbourne, Australia, we also cared for friends’ dogs, including rescues, so we’re comfortable adapting to different personalities and needs. We’re happy to follow any routines you already have in place, whether that’s helping a younger dog build good habits or supporting an older dog who needs a slower pace and a bit more care. Above all, we treat every dog like they’re our own and make sure they feel safe, loved and settled while you’re away.
Reviews
Sam and Evie have looked after our dog, Gerry, a number of times and he absolutely loves them. He’s a rescue and can be a bit reactive with certain dogs, so it was important to us to find the right people who understand and can help Gez thrive. They’ve been brilliant with him. He’s always happy and well looked after when he’s with them. We’d happily recommend Sam and Evie to any dog owner.
Sam has looked after our working cocker spaniel, Louis, a number of times and has always taken great care of him. Louis is very energetic, so it’s been a great fit with Sam taking him out for runs and long walks. We’d happily recommend Sam and Evie to other dog owners, especially for dogs that are used to being out and about in public spaces.
Sam has looked after our staffie/labrador mix, Theo, a number of times and has been consistently warm, reliable, and easy to work with. Theo is always well looked after and happy when we’re back. We’d happily recommend Sam to anyone looking for someone they can trust with their dog.
Having worked with Sam for a number of years, I see how responsible, caring and diligent he is. While at a wedding Sam took care of and walked my dog for the day and I never had any worries at all. He is the only person outside of my family that I would trust to take care of my dog.
