Pet care experience

A lifetime of pets.

I have had pets since I can remember, starting with a wirehaired terrier as a toddler and a black kitten I found and insisted we bring home. I became a professional pet sitter in 1994, so I've been working with other people's animals for 25+ years. My veterinarian trained me on how to administer shots for diabetic pets, so I'm comfortable with clients who have similar medical needs. I'm also a home owner and familiar with things which can go wrong with a house, including during our Pennsylvania winters. I also take care of plants & regularly bring in mail & packages at clients' requests. My own Samoyed dogs are (among other things) a sledding breed, so I know about pulling and can deal with it if it occurs. When house sitting or doing drop-in visits for care and/or walks, I normally scan my clients' homes for weather-related or other damage. I can take unvaccinated animals as long as they are not boarding with me. In the event of an emergency I can take any pet I am caring for to an emergency veterinarian. I have an excellent vet who I have been working with since 1979. I customize contracts; meaning sometimes a client has special requirements and I am willing to work with them to best care for their pet. I open at 7am and close at 9pm, although I can adjust for a client's special needs for travel. I'm a professional pet care provider and a writer, so I work in my home. My husband is also working from home and is usually here to give me backup as needed. I have gated areas inside my home, so I can keep guest dogs separated if necessary. I prefer taking crate-trained dogs, so each guest can have their own area to sleep in overnight and can be easily separated during feeding times.

Rillan was very knowledgeable and patient with our high energy, under-socialized Eskipoo. She was very responsive to us and provided regular updates and photos while we were gone. We would be pleased to have her care for our dog again in the future.

Schedule

I'm also a writer, so I'm at home most of the time. Since guest dogs are kept in my office, I can easily interact with them and make certain they are getting out for playtime in the dog yard or walks around my property or the neighborhood. For dogs who like long walks, there are plenty of farm roads and trails to explore.

Safety, trust & environment

Boarding & daycare clients need to provide proof of current Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccines and worming or proof of a clear fecal exam within the last 6 months. Dogs & puppies should be crate trained or in-training for those times when they can't be under my direct supervision - like when I'm feeding my outside pets or need to go to the store. They should be able to get along with humans and other dogs. I also have cats, so scream-barking at and chasing of cats is discouraged, but not unexpected - the cats have lots of experience with dogs and generally stay away from cat-aggressive dogs.

Pets

A typical day

I have a fenced dog yard with its own deck which is connected directly to the house, so there's no danger of dogs dashing out and escaping. I provide tennis balls, tug ropes, and deer and elk antlers for dogs who enjoy chewing. In addition to my large yard, I have easy access to walking areas, including a large farm directly across the road from my home where I have permission to walk the field edges and farm roads. My Samoyed, Silver, provides guest dogs with companionship and Mom Dog interaction.

PA Dog Law requires all guest dogs to have current Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccines. I recommend the Kennel Cough vaccine having been given in the last 6 months. Dogs should have been wormed within 6 months as well. Guests are expected to provide their own dog food, so I don't upset sensitive digestions. Please let me know what you feed, how often, and how much. I can provide refrigeration for medicines and wet or fresh foods. If you pet is on medications, I need details on how often to provide the medicine. I am trained to do injections, but be aware some pets will not tolerate strangers giving them jabs. Please let me know about other health problems and allergies.
Each sitter joining Rover needs to pass a background check. And by booking on Rover, you can get photo & message updates, 24/7 support, and reimbursement for eligible vet care.
