About Richard G.
Dog skills
Safety, trust & environment
I am available to provide pet care in your home as needed. That could include visits, pet sitting, baths, and/or overnight stays. I am very conscientious about taking care of any & all agreed upon responsibilities.
Information Richard G. would like to know about your pet
I encourage you to share anything important about your pet with me so I can integrate that information into our sessions together. My goal is for your dog to enjoy a fun & stress-free time while in my care.
A typical day
I like to try new things, and follow a dog’s lead in terms of interests. Some options are playing fetch (especially when there’s a treat hidden in the ball), playing tug, figuring out how to use a Kong, or watching TV. Every dog has his or her unique personality, and it’s always fun finding out what is engaging and stimulating for the particular dog I’m working with.

Compassionate Care for your Pet
Pet care experience
I’ve had 4 long-time canine companions over the course of my life, Mutsy, Rusty, Petey & Molly. Each one still holds a very special place in my heart. After we lost Molly, I began volunteering at the Hawaii Island Humane Society. There I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of dog breeds, sizes, ages, temperaments, etc. The most important thing I learned is that to work with a dog effectively, you must gain its trust. By reading a dog’s body language and verbal cues you can tune into what is needed to provide the best care possible. I hope you will trust me to take great care of your dog whenever you need assistance with walks, pet sitting/visits, and/or bathing needs.
Reviews
To whom it may concern, My name is Daleelah Henderson-Bradley, and I am currently the Canine Enrichment Coordinator at the Hawaii Island Humane Society. I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Richard Gorton. Rich has been volunteering with us since 2022 and has done nothing but nurture, respect, and put his utmost effort into enriching the dog’s lives. Since the shelter environment is stressful for the well-being of the animals, Rich has dedicated a multitude of hours to walking, playing and overall supporting the mental and emotional needs of all the animals. When faced with a problem/challenge, Rich works diligently and quickly, focusing his attention on the task at hand. When learning new things, Rich is attentive and asks great questions. When dealing with situations beyond his control, Rich does not let stress overcome, yet he calmly assistshowever he sees fit and always follows protocol. Rich has ultimately helped dogs express their natural behaviors, build self-confidence and trust all by using modern, force-free, science-based training techniques. This includes, but is not limited to: ✓ Decompression walks or as we say “sniffaris” ✓ Engaging in food puzzles/ games with the animals ✓ Helping dogs complete their stress cycle by taking them to the yard for active engagement ✓ Sitting unobtrusively in the kennel with the dogs and going at the dogs' pace The techniques used helped guide Rich during his time here, but his energy alone will definitely be enough to turn all the dogs’ heads! I hope you consider Mr. Gorton for any hands-on canine work/enrichment because he will be a reliable asset to any team! Kindly, Daleelah Henderson- B.
I am pleased to recommend Richard Gorton as a responsible and loving pet caregiver based on his outstanding service as a volunteer with the Hawaii Island Humane Society. Since joining our volunteer program early last year, Rich has consistently demonstrated a commitment to our mission and genuine compassion for the animals in our care. He actively pursued opportunities to expand his knowledge and skills, completing his Fear Free Shelters certification and participating in one-on-one training with our Behavior staff. Over time, Rich grew his skills in handling dogs with a wide variety of behaviors, from shyness and fearfulness to jumpiness and mouthiness. With over 90 hours of volunteering completed, Rich made a meaningful impact on the lives of many shelter dogs along their journey to find their happy ending. The bonds he was able to build with the animals served to nurture their confidence and trust in others, supporting their transition into their future homes. Furthermore, Rich maintained a positive attitude, demonstrated reliability and professionalism, and contributed to the supportive and collaborative culture that is central to HIHS. He embodied the values and mission of our organization, and we were grateful to have him as a valued member of our community. We wish Rich well in his future endeavors and fully support his efforts to continue working in the animal welfare or pet care fields. Sincerely, Maile K. Hawaii Island Humane Society
Rich & I have been married for over 35 years. For 22 of those years we had two dogs, Petey and Molly. Rich was fully committed to taking the very best care of both of them over the course of their entire lives. He rarely, if ever, missed taking either one for its daily walk. Both Petey and Molly were an integral part of our family, and both hold a special place in our hearts. That deep love and compassion that Rich feels for dogs is what serves as his motivation to provide pet care as his life’s work. His experience with our own pets, along with the time he generously gave to the Hawaii Island Humane Society, have helped him develop the knowledge and understanding to use good judgment, make sound decisions, and to gain your pet’s trust. You can be assured that Rich will provide your pet with the very best care possible.
