I’m currently back from college for the summer and don’t have a lot going on (aside from taking care of my own dog) so I’m home and available all day most days (aside from when I occasionally go stay with my long term girlfriend for a weekend or so). I decided to start working with Rover because I love animals and I’m happier when I have such a fun reason to get some exercise and leave my house :)

I have a large grassy (and freshly fenced) in backyard to play in and make sure to routinely check the integrity of the fence and that there aren’t any potential hazards in my backyard. My dog is quite the lounge-around-inside-where-it’s-cool type, so if you would want your dog to have some off leash time in my backyard, even reactive and dog aggressive dogs wouldn’t have issues because they wouldn’t be anywhere near my dog. I also make sure to follow house rules and instructions to the letter (and am strictly no shoes in any house ever) and keep my clients updated on how things are going with photos, videos, as well as update messages. All potential clients are encouraged to meet up with me before entrusting their pets to me, and if you have any interest in your dog having some off leash time with me in my backyard I would be more than happy to give you a tour. Not only those things- but any other requests you may have that can help give you peace of mind when it comes to entrusting me with your fluffy loved ones are encouraged.

What breed(s) are they? What do they typically enjoy doing? Do they have any special needs or concerns? What is their energy level? What trained behaviors do they have that I can help keep consistent? Do they have any individual quirks? Do they have any reactive behaviors such as being dog aggressive, resource guarding, being anxious (or having any specific fears), or any other behavioral concerns?
A typical day
I find it crucial to stimulate both dogs and cats physically AND mentally- something often overlooked when pet wellbeing is concerned. Especially with working breeds/breeds developed for a specific job such as doodles of all kinds, terriers, hounds, retrievers, etc. as well as in general smart or high energy breeds etc. which can get neurotic, and act out for attention. This is why for dogs I aim to exercise their whole body until they get all their energy out (so they are less likely to act out); and do it in ways that get them to do tasks as similar as possible to the ones they were bred to do- with retriever mixes I emphasize fetch, same with other hunting breeds. For most hounds I emphasize tracking games-except for sight hounds who I mainly aim to get them sprinting at full speed for however long they want. For herding dogs I have herding balls that fulfill that herding itch without livestock. There are countless variations for specific breeds but I don’t want this to get too long. With cats it can be a bit trickier but I try to find out what they in particular enjoy doing and going with their lead more than with dogs whom I’ve found commonly enjoy being given a task, but that isn’t to say that I don’t follow the lead of independently-minded dogs as well.

I’ve been taking care of neighborhood dogs and dogs that my parents friends have had since I was in elementary school, and I have an 11 year old miniature poodle mix that I trained myself but I’ve always loved dogs of all breeds. I have experience working with tiny and huge dogs, anxious dogs, reactive dogs, high energy dogs, special needs dogs, untrained dogs, heavy pullers, and puppies of various ages. I’m also quite strong and can handle big/rambunctious/reactive dogs with ease, so you wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not I can safely handle your dog.

Reuben is phenomenal when it comes to pets. His enthusiasm and expertise are incredible, and he has taught me so much about caring for animals as well as all manner of facts about them. The way he can understand and describe the body language of dogs, for example, made me feel like I knew my own dog so much better. Would recommend!
I’m pretty sure Reuben knows more about dogs and dog breeds than anyone I know. He is honest and kind and dogs love him too. Our dog does!
