About Toby

Toby came to us as a foster dog when he was bitten by his kennelmate at the Humane Society and needed care while healing. Before this he was at an outdoor shelter in Texas for five years; they in turn had saved him from a high-kill shelter in the area. This is all the history we know. His age is a guess. Toby is a quiet, affectionate cuddlebug. His favorite thing in the world is to cuddle up next to you on the couch, smother you with kisses, and have a good nap. He likes to always know where you are and will follow you around the house. We're working on his crate and alone training so he can feel comfortable being on his own. He's very gentle and mild mannered--until you get treats or people food out! Then he dances around like a puppy. He learns quickly and is eager to please as we teach him his basic skills. Loves walks and trips to the park. Also loves car rides, so joining us for drive-throughs or errands is always a great adventure for him. He's also fantastic with other dogs. At the dog park, he actually goes up to strangers with a drooly smile to say hi (we think this is adorable) and likes running around with the other dogs and sniffing alongside them. The only thing he doesn't really like is playing/wrestling with other dogs, and he will let them know without becoming aggressive.

  • Gets along with other dogs: Yes
His hackles go up at first, but he'll sniff the dog and feel more comfortable in a few minutes, often even wanting to run and play with them. He gets excited to make new doggy buddies. He just doesn't like them to jump on him or wrestle with him since he's been attacked and injured before.
  • Gets along with cats: Yes
We have an indoor-only cat, and we foster kittens. He has learned "gentle" and is so sweet with them all.
