Pet care experience

Never met a dog I couldn't understa

I've walked dogs thru every stage of my life: for neighbors, friends of friends, professional dog walking companies, etc. I've owned 2 wonderful elderly rescue dogs. Whether it's my dog or a client's, I always take care of the dog. If they're asking for calm and reassurance or for sprinting fields up and down, they're not asking for much so I never deny them. Each dog is different, and each is a little soul, so why not take care of them? Dogs are def my favorite people ;)

Safety, trust & environment

I live in an apartment building. My former dog being corgi, she had no problem safely chilling with me on the balcony on a warm day. My current pet being a cat, I wage a constant but winnable war to keep her from slipping out onto the balcony, at least until I can construct a functioning safe "catio." I do use the balcony to feed birds however, which provides her with hours of entertainment inside watching what I call "cat TV." The balcony wall is all glass and faces south therefore getting sun all day. Dog or cat, they enjoy a nice grooming with a Furminator brush while they enjoy sun napping.

Mia is the BEST! Mia tailors all of her walk to make them personal to the dog she is walking. She is thoughtful and caring, and always puts the safety of your pup first! My dog is high energy, and Mia is awesome, making sure she runs with her a little bit to help her energy out! She sends thorough and personalized reports that make me so happy during my long work days! Mia is the best of the best!!

Mia was a very sweet and patient dog walker with our new puppy (who often refuses to walk). She sent us detailed reports on how he did after each walk. He was always excited to see her come pick him up! She was also very friendly to our neighbors and the folks she interacted with in the neighborhood.

Schedule

I have total control over my schedule currently so routine or ad hoc walks are up my alley. I'm also a night owl, know my neighborhood best thru the peaceful 1am walks I had with my dog, lately passed away from cancer. I've walked dogs before with 'eccentric' schedules for clients such as nurses.

For walks, it's good for me to know if the dog isn't easily comfortable with strangers. If it's anxiety, I enter slowly, announcing my presence, and usually sit near the dog for a few moments to let them observe my energy--that I'm not here to invade, challenge them, or threaten their owners' home. I'm simply here, neutral. I allow the dog to inspect me and offer my hand for smell introduction. For the dogs with severe anxiety I've walked, they quickly catch on that even though I'm a stranger I'm not a threat, and then when I begin the going-on-a-walk process like getting their harness, they let routine kick in so they can go to the bathroom and a soft trust has already started to form between us. For the dogs I've walked described as never tolerating strangers with the potential to bite, I keep in mind my posture especially in regards to my hand near their head. At most, it might take me a few tries at harnessing them or encouraging them in or out of a pen but we've never had any real problems as long as the owner let me know beforehand if the dog has certain triggers, for example letting me know ahead of time that especially no need for head petting or scratches with this dog, she interprets them as a threat. Walking rescued racing greyhounds, who both looked like they had twice the muscle than me, the owner let me know ahead of time that squirrels can lead to bolting if not careful. So whenever we spotted a squirrel I made sure to brace my posture with the lead for the best/worst case scenario if I was about to be yanked, but this kind of acknowledgement during the sightings meant the greyhounds let it go with merely stating their presence in a predator stance to the squirrels, no bolting necessary. I've experienced all kinds of quirks with dozens, possibly near hundred, dogs I've walked over the years and the most severe cases have only meant I schedule extra time to accommodate for working around the dog's fear. But we've always accomplished getting outside and having at the very least a slow or short walk depending on what the dog needs.
