I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand how incredible Mercedes is with animals. Ever since we were kids, she has had a natural connection with them. We grew up showing animals through 4-H, and no matter the species, she was always patient, gentle, and compassionate. It came as no surprise when she chose to become a veterinary technician. While in college, Mercedes formed a special bond with a stray dog that was terrified of people and wouldn’t trust anyone else. Somehow, Stella chose Mercedes as her person. She became part of our family and is still one of Mercedes’ greatest joys. Later, while working at a veterinary clinic in Omaha, a tiny week-old puppy with a severe wound on her back was brought in. The puppy needed around-the-clock bottle feeding and foster care to survive, and Mercedes immediately stepped up. She cared for her every few hours until she was healthy enough to eat on her own. Our whole family fell in love with that little puppy, and after I graduated from college, I adopted her. Three years later, she’s a happy, healthy dog because of the love, dedication, and compassion Mercedes gave her from the very beginning. Mercedes has always had a gift for making animals feel safe and loved. I can’t think of anyone I would trust more to care for a beloved pet.
