Pet care experience

Safe, loving home-from-home 🐾

We’re a dog-loving couple (Harry and Megan) who have both grown up with dogs and really miss having them around! Between us, we’ve had experience with a wide range of breeds and sizes from Great Danes and Neapolitan Mastiffs to Jack Russells and miniature poodles, so we’re very comfortable around dogs with different personalities, energy levels and needs. We don’t currently have pets of our own because we love travelling and exploring when we get the chance, but when we’re home we’d love to be able to give that time and attention to someone else’s dog instead. My boyfriend works from home full-time and I work from home most of the week, only travelling into London around 1–2 days, so there is always someone at home and plenty of opportunity for company, attention and toilet breaks throughout the day. We have a spacious, secure garden with no hazards, and lots of room to play and run around, and we live close to the countryside with plenty of lovely walking routes nearby. We’re also very happy taking dogs on longer walks and adventures if that’s what they enjoy! We know how important it is to feel completely comfortable leaving your dog with someone else, so our aim is to make them feel as settled, loved and at home as possible while they’re with us.

Megan looked after Luna for me in my home while I was away on a holiday for 4 days. Megan followed the careful instructions for Luna’s daily feeding and walking regimes and cared for her with love and respect. Luna loved Megan so much. Megan also treated my home with the utmost care and respect and I would use her again without hesitation.

Leaving Frank with Harry and Megan whenever I go away gives me absolute peace of mind. Knowing he’s in caring, capable hands makes heading off on holiday stress-free. I love getting the regular updates while I'm away, and seeing photos of all the adventures he gets up to! They treat him like family, and it’s clear he gets just as much of a holiday as I do!

Schedule

Our routine is very flexible, which makes pet sitting fit in really naturally with our day to day life. My boyfriend, Harry works from home full time and I work from home most of the week, so we’re able to offer plenty of company throughout the day as well as morning, lunchtime and evening walks. On a typical weekday, we’d usually start with a morning walk before work, often heading to our local country park or one of the countryside routes nearby. Because we both have flexible working hours, we can also fit in lunchtime walks, garden breaks and plenty of attention throughout the day, followed by another walk in the evening if that suits the dog’s usual routine. We do go to a very local gym around three evenings a week, so ideally a dog staying with us would be comfortable being left for around 1–1.5 hours. However, if they’re not happy being left alone, we can easily work around that and go to the gym separately instead. We’re also very happy to look after dogs at weekends. We love getting outdoors, exploring new places and going for walks, so if a dog enjoys travelling in the car, we’d be more than happy to take them along on little adventures with us. It’s also useful for us to know how they are in dog-friendly cafés, pubs and other public places, as we’re quite social and would love to include them in daytime plans where it suits their personality. If that isn’t their thing, that’s absolutely fine too, we’d simply plan our day around what they enjoy and are used to!

Safety, trust & environment

We have a three-bedroom home over two floors with a large, fully fenced rectangular back garden, so there’s plenty of room for a dog to make themselves at home. The garden is easy to keep an eye on from the house and there are no escape points. We’d be happy for them to have access throughout the house, as long as they’re toilet trained and not destructive. When the weather is nice, we usually have the back doors open so they can come in and out as they please. If it’s raining or cold, one of us is always around to let them out whenever they need. We keep towels and blankets downstairs too, so wet or muddy paws are never a problem after walks or time outside. Dogs are very welcome on the sofa with us and we have blankets they can sit on. We wouldn’t have them sleeping on the bed, but if they’re used to sleeping near people, we’d be happy for them to sleep in our bedroom on their own bed or on blankets on the floor. We also have a dedicated area for food and water, and already keep a few basics at home for when we look after friends and families dogs, such as poo bags, a few toys, a lead and treats. We’d always stick to whatever food, treats and routine their owner provides though, and wouldn’t give them anything new without checking first. More than anything, we’d want them to feel relaxed, included and treated as part of the household while they’re with us.

A typical day

We’d tailor activities to each dog’s personality, energy levels and usual routine. We live close to the countryside and a local country park, so there are plenty of opportunities for walks, curiosity, exploring and longer routes for dogs that enjoy being out and about. At home, they can spend time in the garden, play with toys, have plenty of attention and, of course, enjoy sofa cuddles if that’s their thing! If a dog enjoys travelling in the car, we’d also be happy to take them on little adventures to new walking spots or dog-friendly places. For older or less energetic dogs, we’re just as happy keeping things slower and giving them lots of company, gentle walks and time to relax. We’d always follow their normal routine and make sure anything we do suits them.

It’s really important for us to understand your dog’s usual routine, personality and any little quirks that help them feel settled. We’d love to know about their feeding and walking schedule, toilet habits, sleeping arrangements, recall, how they are around other dogs and people, and whether they’re happy being left alone for short periods. We’d also want to know about any allergies, medical needs, medication, fears or triggers, as well as anything they particularly love or dislike. It’s helpful to know how they are in the car and in dog-friendly public places too, so we can plan activities that suit them. The more we know about their normal routine and behaviour, the easier it is for us to make their stay feel familiar, safe and enjoyable.
