Availability

I work from home on a flexible schedule that I set myself, which means I'm present with your pet throughout the day rather than leaving them alone for long stretches. We have a fenced yard for outdoor time and can separate pets as needed, so your animal has a safe, comfortable space even with my own dogs in the home.

Information Mariah H. would like to know about your pet

Before your pet arrives I love to get to know them a little ahead of time. I'll want to know about their daily routine including feeding schedule, portion sizes, and walks so I can keep things as normal as possible. It's also helpful to know about their personality, how they do with other dogs, any fears or triggers like loud noises or storms, and any quirks that are just good to know. On the health side I'll ask about any medications, allergies, dietary restrictions, and your vet's contact information just in case. I'd also love to know if they have a favorite toy or comfort item from home, and I'll always ask for an emergency contact beyond yourself. The more I know ahead of time, the smoother and happier the stay for your pet!

A typical day

Every pet is different, and I believe the best care starts with understanding your pet's normal routine. I'll do my best to mirror your pet’s typical schedule at home, from feeding times to walks to nap times, so they feel as comfortable and settled as possible. I'm always available for walks, play, and plenty of cuddles throughout the day, and with my flexible work from home schedule I'm present and attentive rather than leaving them alone for long stretches. Your pet sets the pace and I'm happy to follow their lead.

Pet care experience

I grew up surrounded by dogs and cats since birth and have spent my whole life building a deep understanding of animal behavior and care. Growing up, my family raised two litters of puppies, giving me hands-on experience with everything from newborn care to socialization and training throughout various life stages. I currently share my home with three dogs of my own and regularly care for friends' cats and dogs, both in my home and theirs. I'm comfortable with dogs of all sizes, from small lap dogs to large breeds, and know that each comes with its own personality, energy level, and needs. People tell me I'm not just a dog person but also someone dogs are drawn to. Cats have been a constant in my life just as long as dogs have. I know how to read their cues, respect their space, and earn their trust on their own terms. I genuinely love every stage of a pet's life and know how to meet each animal where they are, whether that's an energetic puppy, a curious cat, or a laid-back senior. I’ve worked in human crisis intervention for over 6 years, which means I stay calm under pressure and know how to respond quickly and clearly when something unexpected happens. That same steady, caring approach is what I bring to every pet I look after. I do Rover to supplement my nonprofit career, so when I take on your pet it's because I genuinely want to be here, not because I have to be. Your pet won't just be cared for, they'll feel right at home!

Mariah's so great with my cats that it made me realize maybe I don't love my cats enough. Like, "lol" but also, I'm not kidding. I think the things that make her the best petsitter in the world are the following: her discernment, curiosity, and common sense. If there's ever an issue, she's immediately curious about what could be causing it, Googling or searching images or behaviors, or scrolling Reddit to ensure whatever's going on with my cats is normal and okay. Once she gathers more information, she uses it to inform good decisions about whether she contacts me about the problem, whether my cats need some type of intervention for whatever's going on, or whether it's no big deal. And then she just has a ton of basic common sense, which is so appreciated. I also feel extra good with her because she's texted me questions or wanting my opinion about other peoples' pets she was watching, which just proved to me she was being relentless in ensuring that pet's well-being. Overall, just super trustworthy, loves animals so much, is allergic to doing the bare minimum (literally, she goes so above and beyond), and is super enjoyable to chat with and know. Bonus, she works from home and can do her job anywhere so like, yes, please hang on my couch with my cats all day, please. I beg you. Lastly, my cats continue to love on her and be happy anytime she comes over which just shows me they are comfortable and happy with her (and my littlest boy, Milkshake, is NOT like that with strangers ever. Like, other petsitters usually NEVER lay eyes on that guy even when I give them all his best hiding spots). 10/10 would trust to care for my pet again.

I trust Mariah wholeheartedly with my fur babies. She has a way with dogs, they seem to really love her. I have an anxious dog that can be dog reactive on leash, and she is good with him and knows to keep her distance from other dogs on walks. She's pretty attuned to dog behavior as well, I gave her a laundry list of unique quirks that my animals have, and she has taken them in stride, making sure each of them are treated appropriately. It's like having a family member walk and care for them.
