I grew up caring for my family dog and pet-sitting for neighbors whenever they went out of town. In my adult life, I have checked in on pets for friends—changing their food and water bowls, taking them for walks (dogs), sitting patiently until they emerge from under the sofa (cats), and sending little photo updates to their owners. Three years ago, I adopted a senior Westie and gained valuable new skills providing care for an older animal. I learned how to gauge her energy levels and appetite, and how to play and provide her with important mental stimulation. We took regular, steady walks and became recognized in the neighborhood as a slow-moving pair!
