Availability

My availability as a dog carer involves spending lots of time with your dog. It is my habit to get down on the floor with dogs as well as outside to play ball or just lay in the grass. Morning, mid-day, and/or evening walks are part of our routine with your permission. My schedule is very flexible, so there is no conflict in case something unexpected comes up and I need to be 100% focused on a stressed or sick dog.

Information Lindsay D. would like to know about your pet

It is helpful to know your daily routine. I try to emulate this to some degree because consistency is comforting. If a dog has anxiety it's useful to know what this looks like, and what has been effective in calming stress. It is important to have a heads-up if a dog has allergies, leash/food/toy aggression, or is an escape artist. I am not willing to watch a dog that has bitten a person or another dog. I avoid boarding dogs that are extra talkative (bark often), because I find this to be stressful for other dogs, myself, and my neighbors. Lastly, it's important that your dog generally comes when called and does not typically hide or run away when asked to come indoors. Breed Restrictions: I do not host Alaskan Malamutes, Dalmations, Jack Russells, Siberian Huskies, Basenjis, German Shepherds, Dobermann Pinschers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, and Wolf Hybrids. Thank you for respecting this personal rule.

A typical day

Here's where we'll take our walks: My neighborhood is very peaceful with little traffic. I usually walk to a nearby park that has a few trails. All walks are on-leash. Your dog's sleeping arrangement: Your dog can sleep wherever it likes- bring your own dog bed, try one of mine, or get cozy on the couch. If your dog is accustomed to being crated during the night it is likely comforting to have this as an option, however I do not own a crate. Feel free to bring yours, no matter the size. You're also welcome to bring a blanket or other item that smells like home.

Pet care experience

Hi, I'm Lindsay Before I describe my dog care offerings, three important details that could save you time: If your dog is not well socialized / does not get along with other dogs, please do not send a stay request. If your dog is under 5 years old, or large (over 60 lbs) I am not a match. Please allow a minimum of three days advance notice so that we have time to do a pet meet. Thank you! Here are my basics: I have 13 years of dog sitting experience. I offer very safe, affectionate, and attentive care. I have a Small Group Policy: I host a maximum of 3 dogs at once. To keep the energy balanced, I only accept one new guest per booking period, ensuring they are always paired with repeat dogs I already know and trust. I'm home 7 days a week, and am able to balance dog sitting with a very part-time garden consulting business (telework). I conduct careful screening of all dogs. I'm organized + a great communicator. I have a large, amazing yard that your dog will love. >o>o>o I am not a match for high energy dogs. <o<o<o My dog care philosophy focuses on building a strong, healthy bond through positive reinforcement. I do not use intimidation-based tactics. I believe that reward-based techniques are the best way to promote a trusting and respectful relationship. What is it like here? large, fully fenced backyard dog-friendly floors and cozy furniture daily walks (with your permission) smoke-free environment air conditioning Conveniently located: 4 miles from Portland International Airport I began caring for dogs as a way to learn about different breeds at a time when I was considering a second dog. Over time I realized that I got a lot out of dog caregiving, and didn't want to give up my revolving crew of dog buddies. I love dogs because they teach me to be in the moment. I am reminded to take joy in the simple things: eating, sleeping, and playing. Dogs are inspiring! I focus on giving affection, exercise, and positive reinforcement. I also prioritize mentally stimulating dogs with games and puzzles. This is a way for me to build a bond with your dog, help build their confidence, and distract them from separation anxiety. This includes verbal games, search games, and games for less active dogs. Please know that in addition to careful screening, I supervise dogs closely and have lots of experience in proactive strategizing as well as creative problem solving. I always ask folks to come by for a pet meet so that you have an opportunity to share what's important to you for your dog's stay. I provide consistency for your dog(s) by following your usual exercise and meal schedule. Knowing your commands and your dog's quirks are also important to me- I want your dog to feel like I speak your language and am aware of his/her needs. About this sitter: I grew up on a dairy farm. We always had a dog or two or three. Over the years there were Spaniels, Shepherds, Labs, and many, many mutts. I can't imagine a life without dogs. I have lived in Portland for over 18 years. During this time I have worked as a wildlife sanctuary intern, nanny, caregiver with folks with disabilities, preschool teacher, and horticulturalist. In my free time I like to explore the wonderful natural areas that surround Portland. I enjoy gardening, long distance running, cooking, and kayaking. About my yard: I have a wonderful backyard that I love to share with dog friends. It's really big and fully fenced. There are many trees and bushes to sniff and explore. Sunny spots, shady spots, and a kiddie pool for hot days. Please no dogs that regularly dig. **I do not leave dogs outside unsupervised** My experience administering medication: I have extensive experience caring for dogs with health issues, including injuries, illness, and aging-related complications. I am not able to get up in the night to give meds. I have experience: cleaning and rewrapping wound dressings giving pills, eye drops, ear meds, and topical treatments administering subcutaneous fluids / injections, including insulin Occasionally pet parents are in a situation where they must be away from a dog that needs special care. I am confident supporting dogs with serious health conditions and am happy to send extra updates for your peace of mind, as well as be in close touch with your vet if needed. I am not able to lift dogs over 35 pounds regularly; this would apply to dogs with mobility issues. I have learned that dogs sometimes behave differently in a new place. For this reason I have taken a proactive approach to safety- In addition to having a securely fenced yard, I have installed locking gate latches as well as a dutch door so that I can accept packages without opening my front door. I am very mindful of what could go wrong and how I can best respond.

Lindsay is always the best, I had a pup who was on new meds and needed an extra careful eye and I had no fears leaving her in Lindsay’s hands. We’re so lucky to have Lindsay (and Billy) as the pup’s home away from home!

Lindsay kindly accepted a reservation to board our senior cavalier king charles spaniel when we unexpectedly had to attend a funeral out of state. She was very thorough and communicative in every stage of our interactions, from the meet and greet to the final pick up. While we were away, she shared updates about his wellbeing and went above and beyond in sharing pictures. I think Lindsay is a fantastic caregiver and is such a treasure for families with senior dogs. We would love to book Lindsay again and know that our dog with be in wonderful hands.
