For cats, I follow their lead as some may want a full play session while others simply want to be near someone without being fussed over. For house sits I'll spend extra time being present. For dogs, walks are the main event and I make sure they're long enough to feel like a real outing, not just a quick loop around the block. For drop-ins I'll add in some fetch or tug if they are interested.
