Pet care experience

Seasoned, enthusiastic pet sitter!

I grew up with two labs and often helped walk them and give them baths. We also had two cats; I likewise helped feed them and changed their litter. I even administered insulin shots to our diabetic kitty. When I was an au pair during college, part of my responsibilities included helping take care of the two family dogs. I walked them a few times a week, usually in wooded trails, plus occasionally fed them and took them to the vet. A roommate I lived with for two years had a dog whom I doted on as if she were my own! I would take her to the park to run around, and looked after her in his absence when he went out of town. I've also dog and cat-sat many times over the years for friends, family members, acquaintances, and two neighborhood pet care companies, and have several regular clients.

Safety, trust & environment

As my boyfriend's cat is scared of other animals, I am not able to board pets in my home for the time being. Except for in very rare cases, then, I stay in clients' homes when I care for their animals. I understand that cats and dogs need companionship and interaction, so I prioritize spending as much time with them as possible even if I can't be present 24/7. I always make sure I understand clients' house rules clearly (when to take out the trash, where I can sleep, whether or not I can have people over, etc.) and clean up after myself thoroughly before I leave.

Laurel is great! She took the time before the first walk to hear our notes on Maila’s temperament and Laurel asked great initial questions. They went on a 30-minute walk and Maila came back with the biggest smile! Laurel gave helpful notes about what she noticed about Maila during the walk too. Maila is now resting after such a fun walk. We will definitely work with Laurel again.

Laurel always does an outstanding job when she dog sits for us. She’s a great communicator, is kind and caring with our dog Louie, and takes great care of our home when we are away. Thanks Laurel!

We’ve used Laurel twice now to take care of our dogs and have had great experiences! She’s clearly a dog lover and very comfortable handling them, and they both warmed up to her very quickly. One of our dogs is diabetic and needs insulin shots, and she was comfortable giving those and following his strict schedule which we really appreciate. Our other dog had an unexpected injury prior to her staying over with them, and she was flexible to the addition of medications and schedule changes as well.

Schedule

I essentially have a hybrid work schedule at the moment. Sometimes I work remotely and other times I work outside the house for anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. 8-hour days are relatively infrequent, so I can still spend a good amount of time with the animals I care for, only leaving them for a maximum of few hours at a stretch most of the time. To deal with longer shifts, I have sometimes made arrangements with clients such that a substitute sitter stops by to check on the animals while I'm out, either someone I know or someone they know.

Does your dog get along with other dogs or should we keep our distance? Does your dog typically chew anything in the home, such as shoes or electric cables? Is your dog scared of anything in particular, such as cyclists? Is it ok for strangers to pet your dog? Does your dog eat their food right away or graze throughout the day? Do I have any reason to fear that your dog might get aggressive with me?
