Pet care experience

Animal lover with vet experience

I've been working with animals since I was 18, when I began volunteering with my local humane society, where I assisted with feeding, cleaning, socializing, and handling animals. I went on to work as a veterinary assistant at an animal clinic/hospital, where I learned more about handling animals and administering medications for cats and dogs. I no longer work at a veterinary office because I'm currently in an online bachelor's degree program that makes a traditional full-time job difficult to manage. But my schooling is incredibly flexible and I love working with animals, so part-time pet care is perfect for me! I have done pet-sitting for cats and dogs in the past, but I am also comfortable working with fish (I had a beloved betta fish in high school). I am definitely open to caring for other animals, but I would need additional instruction to compensate for my inexperience. I have particular experience with special needs animals because my own cat, Birdie, has hind limb paresis. She scoots around instead of walking, wears diapers, and has daily oral medication. "Special needs" encompasses a wide range of conditions, so I won't pretend to know how to care for all disabled animals but my personal experience provides me with the patience and flexibility to learn about the particular needs of your pet.

Safety, trust & environment

I understand that every animal is different, so I don't have a universal approach to pet-sitting. I believe enrichment is essential to an animal's wellbeing and I incorporate that into my pet care. I make sure to take time to play with pets as well as feed, walk, or clean after them.

Katherine is one of the most compassionate and dependable people I know. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her for over 12 years, and I can confidently say I have never met anyone who cares for animals the way she does. She has lovingly cared for her own three cats, including her current cat whom she first fostered for a few years and later adopted. Her sweet girl Birdie has a spinal cord injury that prevents movement or sensation in her hind legs and lower back, so she requires much more significant care and attention than other pets. I doubt that many people would have agreed to providing such significant care as a foster parent, but Katherine has always happily provided the love, support, and care that Birdie needs. They developed such a strong bond that after three years as a foster parent to Birdie, Katherine couldn't imagine Birdie's forever home being anywhere else. Katherine provides this level of care with patience, attentiveness, and genuine love, not only to Birdie but to all animals she comes in contact with. In addition to caring for her own pets, she has looked after animals belonging to family and friends, always treating them as if they were her own. She has volunteered with animal rescues and worked as a veterinary technician at two different veterinary offices, giving her both hands-on experience and professional knowledge. Katherine is attentive, responsible, and deeply committed to the well-being of every animal she cares for. Any pet parent would be incredibly lucky to know that Katherine would provide this level of care to their own pets, and she most definitely will treat them as her own. I've seen her love and care for my own cat, several of our friends' cats and dogs, and would recommend her care to anyone else.
