Safety, trust & environment

I operate on a drop-in method, meaning that I will visit your home to care for your pet. I prioritize making your pet comfortable, and will work with you to make sure your pet's needs are met.

Information Katherine L. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if your pet has any behavioral quirks or preferences- I understand that each animal is different, and many pets and families have important routines and preferences that keep a dog happy and comfortable. Animals are often highly routine-driven, and breaks in routine can cause stress and anxiety, so I like to recreate existing routines as much as possible. I am happy to work with a range of temperaments- ahead of the appointment, please let me know if your dog has any health or behavioral factors that I should be aware of. In general, I avoid dog-to-dog interactions when walking a client's dog, but please let me know if your dog has any friends that they like to interact with in the neighborhood! Finally, I am well experienced in walking dogs that tend to pull on their leash, and in these cases I would like to know how you generally handle walks, and if your dog has any specific triggers that prompt pulling.

A typical day

When caring for a dog, I like to provide a mix of physical and mental stimulation. I like to take dogs on long walks with plenty of sniff stops, allowing them to stretch their legs while engaging their senses. Outside of walks, I love to play fetch or frisbee, and am happy to learn your dog's favorite game or activity. I also enjoy taking slower moments to give the dog pets and personal attention, and especially enjoy leading treat-training sessions to practice and learn new tricks.

Pet care experience

Hi, my name is Katie! My family dog, Bo, is the center of my universe, so I understand just how important your pet is, and I am committed to offering you the peace of mind of knowing that your pet is being cared for. I prioritize respect of the pet's boundaries and comfort levels in order to create a safe and positive experience, an approach I’ve found particularly helpful in working with high-anxiety dogs. I spent a year volunteering as a dog walker with the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA; in this capacity, I received training on safe dog handling practices and gained experience walking dogs of all sizes and breeds. I am comfortable caring for animals both small and large, and have particular experience walking dogs that pull on their leash. I understand body language cues and take proactive steps to recognize and avoid situations that might make your pet anxious. I understand that each pet is a microcosm of emotions and routines, and am happy to learn your pet's games, tricks, routines, and boundaries. Your fur baby is your world, and I will keep them safe and happy! By working with me, you can rest assured that your pet will be given the love and respect that they deserve, and that they will be kept safe and happy. I also enjoy taking goofy pet pictures of the animals I care for, so you can look forward to plenty of fun updates!

Katie provided excellent care to our dogs. She followed up with us to make sure we were informed on their behavior and any concerns. The dogs love Katie and feel safe and comforted by her. She is a great dog sitter!

Katie is a conscientious and caring dog-sitter. She did a great job establishing trust and providing emotional comfort to our dogs while we were away. One of our dogs is particularly anxious when we leave, and he responded well to Katie. Both of our dogs loved her. They received excellent care, and we appreciated the written updates and photos.
