Volunteering at shelters and petting for others had given me experience with a variety of different cat behaviors and personalities. Nonverbal communication is vital, as well as resisting the urge to take behaviors personally. Ex: a cat did not suddenly hit you during play because they hate you, they were almost certainly overstimulated and swatting was the instinctive way to communicate that if you missed other signs. Litterboxes, wet and dry food, and water are the bare bones of cat care- keeping to their schedule helps reduce stress when their owners are away, as well as generally keep cats happier. My own furballs love to play, from puzzle boards, fetch, and ‘catfishing’ with feather wants and the like. Play sessions are just as important for cats as dogs, and it is such a great way to engage with your pets, as well as fostering positive associations with a new animal.
