Working from home has allowed me to be flexible with my time and also focus on the animals in my care. There is plenty of time for one on one attention, snuggles, walks, enrichment opportunities, and exercise.

I believe in being proactive and not reactive. I believe in thinking about something, having a plan for what could go wrong, and what can go right, and then executing that plan. Trying to foresee all potential outcomes and plan accordingly keeps everyone safe. At my house, there is a fenced in backyard, with dual gated entrances to make accidental escapes virtually impossible. Inside my house, I live in a gated community. Gates and crates are utilized as necessary in order to keep everyone safe. There are multiple entrances to help maintain an organized flow of traffic. I like to do meet and greets for new clients in order to make sure everything is a good fit and I can answer any questions you may have.

Pet care experience
Kara proudly calls Connecticut home, and has had the opportunity to teach and assist with classes at various dog training facilities in state and in Massachusetts. She enjoys teaching family dog obedience, barn hunt, weight pull, nosework, and tricks as well as modifying fearful, reactive, and aggressive behaviors in dogs. Kara is a judge for United States Canine Scent Sports (USCC) and Happy Ratters, and is also an AKC Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog evaluator. Finally, she also serves as a puppy raiser for various service dog organizations and works closely with several rescues in state. Kara has always been a natural teacher. She has a sincere passion and enthusiasm for learning and educating people. Kara holds a master’s degree Medieval Studies with a focus on British and French literature, and is a former college professor. However, she credits her true calling to become a dog trainer to her dad, who seemed to possess the ability to charm ant dog he met, as well as her previous dog, Angelus, a rescued Rottweiler x German Shepherd x Husky mix. It was Angelus’s struggle with separation anxiety that sparked Kara’s interest in animal training and behavior. Kara loves to learn and has benefited from shadowing and being mentored by various dog trainers throughout her career, learning about everything from obedience and sports to pets and behavior modification to service dogs and personal protection/bite work. She regularly attends conferences, seminars, workshops, and webinars to enhance her knowledge and stay up to date with the latest training techniques. Furthermore, she holds a nationally recognized dog training certificate (knowledge assessed) through The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. Currently, and is pursuing a certification in canine behavior. She also has extensive experience raising and training puppies as well as caring for senior dogs. She holds a certificate in CPR and Canine First Aid through The American Red Cross and is comfortable administering medication. Kara’s other interests include all forms of canine medicine (including natural, alternative, and holistic approaches), nutrition, canine fitness and conditioning, and biological fulfillment.

Reviews
One of our biggest concerns when we got our first dog was who could we trust to watch our dogs and help reinforce our training style. We knew that most doggy daycares and pet sitters do not have the same background and expertise as a professional dog trainer. Then we found Kara! A certified trainer who does boarding?! It was like we won the lottery as dog parents. Kara has been our dog trainer and babysitter for our two Australian Shepherds for the last 7+ years. She helps maintain structure and keep our dogs safe all while having fun when we are out of town. Our younger dog is reactive and extremely selective of people. He cannot be left alone with most people but Kara is one of three people in the entire world he can be around. Our older dog doesn’t even look back at us when we drop her off at Kara’s for boarding or day school. She usually has separation anxiety but it happens to disappear when she’s at Kara’s. This shows how much love and care she pours into our two dogs. Kara is our village and our whole family loves her. If you’re looking for a trustworthy, kind, caring dog sitter or trainer, she is your girl.
Writing this review is truly a selfless act because, hands down, Kara is the best kept secret for any dog owner. She was recommended to us by a dear, trusted family friend, who is as particular as we are in terms of who and where she will leave her dogs. Kara is incredibly knowledgeable about animals. I will only speak to her expertise with puppies/dogs because that is what I know about her best. First, she is loving, respectful, and meets you and your animal where you/he/she is. In addition to being responsible and passionate about her work, she is also a Certified Professional Dog Trainer Behavior Consultant, AKC Canine Good Citizen & Trick Dog Evaluator. We were so nervous about leaving our small dog with anyone outside of the family, but because of Kara's reputation and our interactions when she first helped us train our dog when she was a puppy, we felt confident leaving her in Kara's care. Kara exceeded our expectations, taught our dog recall, and taught us how to maintain the behavior. She cares not only for the animals she interacts with, but also about her relationships with the people with whom she works. She takes every precaution to ensure your dog's safety and wellness. Truthfully, when our dog comes home from time with Kara, we can tell she misses her and the fun she has in her company. Kara is skilled with both small and large dogs. Look no further! You won't find anyone better than Kara! She is a treasure and the only person we ever leave our pup baby with!
I highly recommend using Kara to care for and help with your dogs! She is a professional dog trainer, who has helped me with my own dogs. She is responsible, educated, experienced, and cares for dogs like they are her own. Her expertise and compassion for dogs combined with her professionalism will leave you a satisfied customer.
Kara is the only person I trust my dogs with. She has always been kind and loving to them. She provides a safe environment which is very important to me. Kara is very knowledgeable about dog breeds, training, health, nutrition and animal behavior. I can't say enough wonderful things about Kara and the care she provides my dogs.
