I am retired and although I have a small business, it is run from my home and only as busy as I allow it to be. Most of my friends are retired so I am able to see them any day, not just on weekends.

I have always looked after pets in their homes. I think it is important for them to be comfortable in their environment, especially when a virtual stranger is entering it and their "parents" are not around. I enjoy working with animals to make them comfortable. Tossing a soft toy for a cat, or something that will make a dog sit up is always good to get their attention and interest. Animals instinctively know if you like them and will respond accordingly. Knowing that they can trust you with getting them out to potty (in the case of dogs) or having a clean litter box (cats) is key. It doesn't hurt when you are the provider of meals and approved treats! I have experience with anxious dogs and administering medicines, depending on your requirements.

A typical day
I love stimulating animals both intellectually and physically. Yes, I do basic training and have taught dogs basic commands. Walkies are a big part of the day, especially for pets who don’t have a backyard. I enjoy walking dogs around neighborhoods, some fields and to reputable dog parks. I also have taken my charges to Tyson’s Corner, where dogs on leashes are welcome.

I've taken care of dogs since I was a young girl. I am now retired so it's been a very long time! I have worked with very young pups to very senior dogs. It gives me a lot of pleasure to know that a dog feels safe and happy to express itself. That is done by giving them an enriching experience, whether inside the house or outside. Nothing better than a good walk to clear out the cobwebs - either on sidewalks, fields or in enclosed dog-friendly parks. It's important to check out the dog parks to ensure that it is used by well behaved dogs and clean. I heed the advice and tips from dog parents in terms of schedules because it's a very important part of looking after an animal.

June was a reliable and trustworthy caregiver for our 2 cats for 6 days. They're shy and didn't warm up to a stranger in that short time but we never worried about them or our home; the cats were fed and clean and safe, we received daily photos and reports, and June even cleaned one cat's throw-up from a rug and called us in real time when one cat was hiding (he promptly showed himself the next day). June cared for our loved beagle for several years until his last days. She was like family for our dog, caring for him either in our house or hers.
