I grew up with dogs and had my first dog at the age of five. We adopted a 1/2 Rat Terrier 1/2 Chihuahua mix from Animal Control in SF Bay area. He was my constant companion that traveled with us from California to Hawaii to Boston and then the US Virgin Islands. My mother was raised on a farm and taught me much about animal husbandry, proper care, and patience for other sentient beings besides our human selves!, Growing up, I was taught to view pets as part of the family unit and to approach care taking from that perspective. One very important principle I take in pet care is to be respectful of a pet's natural instincts and their way of communicating to you! Anthropomorphism, while often great boost to the human ego, may not serve our pets needs as they should be recognized for species they are and that they possess their own set of characteristics. In identifying these traits, effective intercommunication can be achieved, thus leading to a far more harmonious relationship between the human and their beloved pets. I believe in providing safe & gentle boundaries for your dog, so that the walks (with leash/leads), are safe and playtime at the dog runs provides healthy socialization and exercise. Of course, if your dog has conditions that limit this kind of activity, I adjust to suit your dog's activity and socialization level (if required, I do administer medication from your vet). Equally important is the care of your home while you are away! Maintaining a clean and safe environment for your pet during the sitting period is necessary for their comfort and security, (freshly washed bowls daily, eating area free of crumbs, vacuuming pet hair from upholstery and and floor rugs, or sweeping floors on a regular basis, and making sure to clean consistently after myself means you come home to a bright, fresh clean environment!
