Caring for the Pets Who Own Us

I've been providing pet care through Rover for over a year, in addition to having a lifetime of experience caring for pets of my own and for friends and family. I've primarily been a cat parent, but I genuinely love dogs and have enjoyed caring for a wide variety of breeds, personalities, and ages. I'm comfortable caring for playful puppies and kittens, energetic adult pets, and senior animals who need a little extra patience and gentle attention. I also have experience administering medications to both cats and dogs and am happy to follow detailed care instructions to keep pets' routines as consistent as possible. I understand that pets are family, and that leaving them in someone else's care is a big decision. My goal is to give each pet the individual attention, companionship, and care they need to feel safe, comfortable, and loved while their humans are away. I lost my beloved 14-year-old-cat last year, and while I'm not currently ready to welcome another pet of my own, caring for other people's pets has been a wonderful way for me to continue having animals in my life.

Safety, trust & environment

When caring for pets in a client’s home, I focus on making them feel safe, loved, and comfortable in their familiar environment. I understand that every animal has a unique personality. Some prefer quiet companionship from a distance, while others seek affection and love to be right by your side. Some pets need plenty of playtime to burn off energy, and I’m always happy to engage with them in the way that suits them best. My care routine includes feeding according to their schedule, including special diets, when needed); making sure they always have fresh water; cleaning litter boxes; taking dogs out for bathroom breaks and walks; and picking up after them. I also make sure pets receive plenty of playtime, affection, and attention. If medications are part of their routine, I’ll administer them as directed. I’m also available for overnight stays, which can be especially helpful for pets who benefit from extra companionship and consistency while you’re away. If your pet needs attention or a bathroom break during the night, I’m happy to be there. For overnight stays, I appreciate having a private guest bedroom or designated sleeping space with clean bedding and access to a clean bathroom. I'm most comfortable having my own sleeping space rather than sharing a bed with pets, while still being close by to provide care when they need it. I also appreciate having the home reasonably tidy and ready for an overnight guest when I arrive. I'm happy to take care of normal pet-related cleanup during my stay and leave the home as I found it. My goal is to provide dependable, thoughtful care that keeps your pets comfortable and their routines as consistent as possible while you're away.

Joni was so caring and thorough about checking to be sure my pets were doing well and rolling with their nerves. It set my mind at ease while I was away to know she was taking such good care of them.

I would highly recommend Joni! She was prompt in our appointments and arrival to our house. This is the first time we’ve used a service to watch our dog, and I felt totally at ease as soon as I met her. She was respectful of our home, and left everything as she found it. She also sent pictures and updated us on our pets activities daily. I’d look forward to booking her again.

Very happy with Joni’s care of Finn & Evie. She may have taken too good of care of them, lol, cause Finn wasn’t as excited to see me as I expected he would be. But that’s a good thing. Would definitely have Joni watch them again.

Schedule

I enjoy spending plenty of quality time with the pets in my care and am especially flexible on Fridays and weekends, when I'm able to provide more frequent potty breaks, exercise, companionship, and attntion throughout the day. Monday through Thursday, my schedule is more structured because I'm in class from 9 AM to 4 PM. I'm available before and after class and stay overnight with pets when house sitting. Since every pet has different needs, I'm happy to discuss their routine and make sure my schedule is a good fit before booking.

Before watching a pet, I like to make sure I have all the important information to provide the best care possible. Here are some of the key things I like to know ahead of time: Emergency Information * Preferred veterinarian in case of an emergency * Preferred Rover contact method in case something comes up (message or call) Feeding & Health * Feeding schedule and any special dietary needs * Any medications your pet takes, including how and when to administer them (oral, topical, etc.) * Any other health considerations I should be aware of Temperament & Behavior * General personality: Are they shy, social, or somewhere in between? * How they respond to petting and affection * Any quirks or behaviors I should know about (e.g., jumping, licking, chasing squirrels, etc.) * How they interact with other pets and people * Any separation anxiety, reactivity, or other behaviors that may require additional attention Daily & Nighttime Routine * What does a typical day look like for your pet? * How long are they comfortable being left alone? * What are their usual sleeping arrangements and nighttime needs? * How often do they need bathroom breaks or litter box cleaning? Exercise & Enrichment * Do they need to be walked? If so, how often and where do they usually go? * What are their favorite activities, toys, or games? * How much exercise and playtime do they typically need? House Rules & Boundaries * Are there areas of the home that are off-limits? * Are there any routines, rules, or boundaries I should reinforce? Having these details upfront helps me provide care that is consistent with your pet’s usual routine and keeps them happy, comfortable, and well cared for while you’re away.
Each sitter joining Rover needs to pass a background check. And by booking on Rover, you can get photo & message updates, 24/7 support, and reimbursement for eligible vet care.
