Golden Retriever mom, home all day

Pet care experience

I have had and cared for dogs and cats my entire life. I have had so many different breeds from mixes, a Keeshond was my first adult dog and I also even had two Rottweilers. I always dreamed of Golden Retrievers since visiting my aunt who had several on her property in North Carolina. Now I have two English Cream Goldens. I love all dogs and especially labs and goldens or any mix with them! I love all dogs and a lot of the fun of petting setting for me is meeting different dogs. I am home all day and like to have a maximum of 2 dogs so that the dogs staying with me have an experience where they feel like family and get lots of attention. Our home is perfect for dogs with a front courtyard, huge and level fenced yard, dog proof flooring, lots of extra room for dog play, dog beds and also some hot/cold outdoor faucets for those muddy days. Cleo is trained as a Therapy dog. She and I are a certified team and so are her and my daughter Billie. We love doing therapy dog work and so does Cleo! We plan to train Krypto as a therapy dog as well when he is a little older. Caring for Senior Dogs I have lots of experience caring for large senior dogs and my home is really well suited for senior dogs. It’s all one level and if you go out the front door there is a single step to get outside to the courtyard that leads to the yard. I also have ruggables all over that are easily washed and I can bring out even more and cover all walking paths if a dog needs rugs to be sturdy on their feet and walk. I have cared for two dogs that had a lot of elder and health care needs. One had diabetes and I am very good and used to giving medication. My dogs are very good with dogs that are at a slower pace. Our beloved BulMastiff Belle passed at 13 years old in 2023 and Cleo and Krypto were so gentle but loving with her as she was their gradma figure. I have a Honda minivan with the seats out that is low to the ground and can pickup and drop-off, this is the perfect car to transport senior dogs as they can lay on the ground and its very low to step into or very little angle to a ramp. They can be attached to the seat hooks instead of a seatbelt clip. I can do pickup and drop off. The van can help with any unplanned vet trips too.

Joann and her family were awesome taking care of our dog, Roxie. She had a great time playing with Krypto & Cleo (and the other dogs that visited!), and we were happy to know that she was enjoying her stay with the updates/pics provided. We will definitely book again with Joann in the future and really appreciated her accommodating Roxie’s stay on short notice. We also really appreciated the meet-and-greet ahead of time to help her get to know Roxie and to introduce Roxie to her pups. Thank you, Joann!!

Toby enjoyed his time there with wonderful updates along the way. I had no reservations about booking Toby again in 3 weeks. Thanks Joann!

Joann was great to work with. She was very caring towards our dog and was happy to send updates and pictures throughout the stay. Shyla had a great time with her two dogs and seemed to fit right in and be happy there. We will definitely be booking with Joann again.

The perfect place for my pup away from home! Joann is awesome, I absolutely loved the photos/video and updates she sent, and completely trust her care. Finn had such a great time playing with Cleo and Krypto as well, I think he is really missing their playtime! I can't imagine a better place for him to stay, and will book again anytime I am away!

I board dogs that can integrate into our family and be with us all the time just like our two dogs. I am with the dogs whenever they are outside. We have a wonderful backyard and enclosed courtyard for lots of outdoor time. Please let me know if your dog chews or needs to be in a crate when I leave or over night. Your dog can be free with mine when I leave, in their crate or I can have them in a separate room. We will discuss what is best during a meet and greet. Most of the time the dogs all stay together but sometimes for the first day or two I keep them separate when I leave. I want any dog staying with me to feel like they are on a fun vacation and loved so the goal is to make sure they will be happy but also crate them if they will chew my furniture or are not potty trained yet. I can be flexible with my schedule and try to take last minute requests but I do require a meet and greet. I do this to make sure the dogs and my home are a fit and to prevent an last minute spoiled plans. I will work with you to fit a no cost meet and greet in before your dogs stay. A meet and greet helps the dogs too. They are always more excited to be here the second time they come so it really makes the actual drop off better. The meet and greet is a great time for you to get all your questions answered and make sure you are going to be able to feel relaxed leading up to and during your time away. I will spend the time with you needed to show you around, meet my dogs and to answer all of your questions. We can also go over special instructions and I will document them and save them for when you drop off.

Information Joann S. would like to know about your pet

I have two teenagers that live at home with me and one college student at home during the holidays. They love animals and will be part of the stay and love provided to your dog. My mom lives close and bring her golden retriever by for play dates alot. He is in my photos and his name is Bailey. My friend also brings her small/medium dog by some too and he name is Simba and she is also pictured in my photos too. They come for weekend dinners typically. It's alot of fun for the dogs with the people and dogs coming for visits. I will ask you at the meet and greet how you feel about your dog playing with other dogs. I have a large bedroom area and separate fenced area if your dog needs to be separated during some of the visits. Most of the time the best dogs to stay with us are the ones that enjoy play and want to have play time. My House We have double protection that prevents dogs from getting out loose. If a dog slips out the front or back door there is a privacy fend around entire back/sides and then in the front a gated courtyard that is always shut (strong spring on gate to ensure it stays closed). This makes it very relaxing and safe to know the dogs will not get loose if they are prone to be excited and run out the door when family or guests are coming/going. My house sits back about 250 feet from the road so there is also a long driveway. The courtyard is a nice dry outdoor area in the rainy months and ping pong central in the summer. or be around all of the fun. The house is spacious enough that older dogs generally lay on their bed, under a table, off to the side and enjoy being around all of the activity but are not necessarily playing. I will ask you during the meet and greet your preference for where your dog stays when I do leave the house, I am home most of the time but need to leave for errands or food. This will also depend on your dogs temperament. They can have their own room and bed, be in a crate or if appropriate be loose in the main part of the house with my dogs. I have lots of Ring cameras outside that cover the entire yard spaces but also inside so that I can check on the dogs and make sure they are not upset or stressed when I leave. I can speak to them through the cameras. Often when I leave one of my teenagers is home or my mom comes over too so it’s sometimes the case your dog would never actually home without humans here. My Yard My house is shaped like an L and the detached garage makes is a U. There is entirely fenced yard around the entire U and a courtyard on the inside of the U. This makes for lots of room to run and play. I have some separate fenced areas at the tips of the U to separate dogs when needed. This also means a lot of the time there are two gates/fences between your dog and the neighbors/driveway. We start our mornings on my master deck and play area, midday in the big area in the back or in the courtyard and evenings there is a smaller area fenced off for night potties so I can keep a close eye on them and keep it short later at night in the dark. My yard and courtyard are the best parts of the house and make it ideal for the dogs. Bath’s If your dog needs a bath or to be rinsed when they are here I have two outdoor hoses that have both hot and cold water. One of the hot and cold hose areas is in the courtyard and has tethers for me to clip the dogs so I can easily rinse them off or wash them. This makes for a very easy comfortable process if they become muddy or stinky. I also have an inside shower that is walk in and has a clip for me to tether them for washing inside. If your doggy needs a bath they will be very comfortable here and will not have freezing water on them which would be awful in the winter. I do not often need to give bath’s but do if required and do rinse feet quite a bit which some dogs prefer to the toweling off if they are really dirty. Treats I give Stewart’s dried beef liver to my dogs and always have plenty for any dog staying here. I will ask you at the meet and greet what treats (if any) your dog can have as well as allergies. I can keep special treats for your dogs next to the Stewart’s and only treat your dog with their if desired. I only give treats 1 or 2 times per day maximum as my Clea needs to be careful what she eats. Food I have a separate wash area and refrigerator for the dogs. I can prepare whatever food your dog needs. I wash their food bowls after each meal and the water bowls at least 1x per day in my dog prep area.

A typical day

I spent most of my time at home. We have a large fenced in yard and front courtyard area that allows the dogs to be outside with us. I let them go potty first thing in the morning and then have open play time outside. I then bring them in and feed them, then I do the morning chores (washing all the dog bowls, wash dog towels/toys vacuum dog hair) and they hang out inside with me while I do that so their food can settle for a while. Now that the weather is warm as we were heading into summer we got outside and I let the dogs play some more in the back and then bring them to the courtyard while I garden or read or just enjoy the outside. I may leave for an hour or two go go to the store or out to dinner but that is only about 3 days of the week. My kids usually get home from school and work in the evenings and we eat dinner kind of late. This means the dogs eat around 7 – 8 and then go out once more closer to bed time. In the house they can play to with a couple of larger open areas. They are usually tired and sleep tho! The dogs are not outside alone and I’m always out there watching them unless it’s a quick night potty where I watch from the door. Most dogs get all their wiggles and excitement out within a day as there is so much play time. If your dog needs extra walks or activities then that can be requested. We live near Big Finn Hill Park, Denny Park and St. Edwards State Park and have amazing neighborhood to walk in. I try and do as much as I can with the dogs at home so I am home for all of them and also because they usually love all being together and being part of a fund doggy pack during their stay.

I am home all day with the exception of running some errands, dinner out or a walk. I never leave my own or others dogs outside unsupervised even though we have a fenced yard. My dogs love other dogs and they get good exercise outside playing with each other. I have two teenagers home all the time and one at college that also love animals and will be in and out of the home. My mom also often comes over with her english cream golden retriever Bailey. Bailey loves to play with other dogs.
