Growing up, animals weren’t just pets in our home — they were family. I’ve spent my whole life caring for a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, rats, snakes, lizards, pigs, and backyard birds like turkeys, chickens, ducks, and quail. My mom worked as a wildlife rehabilitator, so from a young age I helped nurse injured and orphaned wild animals back to health — including squirrels, rabbits, beavers, opossums, raccoons, and turtles. That experience taught me how to stay calm, patient, and attentive with animals of all temperaments and needs. Our family currently has two dogs and I have my own pet rats, so I’m an active, hands-on pet owner every single day. Sadly, I lost my own beloved dog last year, and that experience only deepened my understanding of just how much our pets mean to us.
