I am a recent graduate working very part time while I work on next steps. This fortunately means that I am often free while others are at work during the day and accordingly happy to walk, feed, and keep pets company when you are away.

Safety, trust & environment

I am generally a calm and put-together type of person. If I am hired to stay over with a dog or cat--as opposed to simply walking/taking them out or feeding them--you can expect me to play with them if they want, or curl up on the couch with a good book if all they want is company/cuddles. My super power with dogs is regulating myself to help regulate them--something I learned working with anxious shelter dogs--I have lost count of the number of times I've heard variations on "I've never seen her/him this calm/friendly meeting someone before."

Information Janna P. would like to know about your pet

I will only watch overnight a dog or cat I have met previously either through a drop-in or walk--this is to minimize the stress experienced by your beloved pet as separation anxiety can be much higher for longer periods. I prefer a joint getting-to-know-each-other walk for new walking clients in which I walk with you and your dog to meet you and learn your walking habits and needs--I do not charge for this. Please let me know in advance a about your dog(s)' size, energy level, personality, triggers, and any, dietary, medical, or special needs. I am generally available between 9am and 5pm Sunday-Thursday and from 9am to 3pm Fridays for drop-ins and walks. Overnight availability may vary. I am prompt when responding to messages/ requests during the day, but do not use my phone between Sundown Friday and Sundown Saturday. If you reach out late in the day on Friday or on Saturday, you can expect a response Saturday evening or early morning Sunday. Overnight stays are priced for 18 hours of my time per 24 hours. If you need me for a full 24 hours or to avoid leaving the house completely (aside from dog walks, of course) during a multi-day stay, we can negotiate a fair price accordingly. I am happy to bathe dogs. That said, I am willing coax, bribe, direct, and soothe a dog into accepting a bath, but I will not force them.

A typical day

I love to play and hangout with dogs. I am open to long walks, calm outdoor hangouts (great for senior dogs and others who can't walk as far), fetch, and other games. I also have experience wrestling and playing gently and safely with old, disabled, and anxious dogs in a way thay still stimulates and entertains them, playing tug-of-war with a 110lb mastiff, providing cuddles and attention to "velcro" and anxious/separation-anxious dogs, and helping highly active dogs work through their energy with obedience practice and extended active play.

Pet care experience

I have had and lived with dogs for about 20 years and first pet sat (chickens and two cats) at about age twelve (~14 years ago). I have been watching animals (mostly dogs) with frequency since about age 13. I began by watching the neighbor's dog on occasion, and a couple years later spent the summer volunteering in an animal shelter (cats and dogs). After moving to Minnesota, I began to watch my aunts' dogs and cat when they would go out of town and watched, walked, and cared for my roommate's cat and neighbors' dogs between 2020 and 2024. I still watch my aunts' dog Cinnamon for them periodically and sometimes walk their neighbors' dogs. I grew up with a three-legged golden/lab mix, and following that and other experiences, dogs with special needs such as senior and disabled dogs hold a special place in my heart, as do dogs with anxiety or nervousness. While I have the most experience with dogs, I have also cared for and/or spent time with other pets and critters including cats, chickens, hermit crabs, exotic birds, and goats!

We liked Janna! Serious, loves dogs (Rosie fell in love with her immediately), patient with Angus. She understands reactive dogs and she did very well with ours.

Did a great job. Was really super friendly and communicative, along with flexible with some last minute schedule changes.

Janna has taken care of 3 of our dogs over the years and has been excellent with each one. She adapts to each dog personality and has infinite patience. Our current dog is so clueless we thought she couldn’t be trained. Janna proved us wrong. The dog is much easier to handle now and has better manners. The dog is also happier because she understands what she is supposed to do. Janna’s dog training skills are excellent. She trained a dog as a service dog who went on to do amazing work. Janna is kind, patient, and makes a connection with each animal she interacts with. She balances that with gentle but firm discipline (withholding the treat until the behavior is demonstrated correctly). I would trust her with any pet.
