Training & Care for all dogs!

Starting with Rover as a client, I've only begun working for Rover in the last couple of years. However, working with animals has been a large part of my life. Over the years, I've trained multiple dogs from mastiff mixes to feisty frenchies, and watched and walked adventurous, puppy corgis to ever-sweet, older rescued street dogs. I absolutely love all dogs. They entertain, teach, excite, and fascinate me. From a young age, I've trained dogs, starting at dog shows and in 4-H. Recently, I've expanded my training to behavior, agility, obedience, and nose work. I've also been involved in taking a deeper look at my own breed's history and standards, producing the Judge's Education presentation for the AKC. Most recently, I've gained my training certification, and have begun working privately with clients on puppy training, adoption adjustment, basic obedience, and clearer communication and consistency while developing a richer, more stable companionship. Not everyone has a breed of choice, however I've always had an affinity for Standard Schnauzers. They're challenging, intelligent (one used a mirror to communicate with me from around a corner), and fiercely loyal—but also really good for a laugh! All dogs amuse me, but schnauzers have the same sort of humor as I do, I guess. Fortunately, I got to grow up with them, training many dogs and puppies. For me as a kid, it was the best! It was hard work, but I learned a lot. And because of it, I've challenged myself to train, compete, and get multiple titles on my own dogs. However, I've also worked with many dogs who were not my own and not schnauzers: lots of rescue dogs, a few purebreds, many mixed breeds, and a number of them with pretty sever health issues, both chronic and acute. But, from me, they’ve all required a few basics: clear direction, quiet confidence, consistent boundaries, rules, respect, and positive rewards; and out of that usually comes a bond of love and fun! I specialize in caring for puppies, seniors, and those dogs with special needs or who are recovering from illnesses, such as cancer treatment or kidney disease. Through Rover, I hope to connect with many more dogs and their owners! Helping out where I can. And it will be great to meet and work with you! Thank you for this opportunity!

Holly has been an awesome caretaker for my 8 month old dog Asa. She is patient, attentive, and caring. Her Rover cards are incredibly helpful, and I can tell she is really focused on taking care of Asa, training him, and making sure he has a nice fulfilling mid-day walk. She is very knowledgeable in terms of training techniques and also values building a meaningful bond with Asa. Definitely would recommend her to care for your pup!

Schedule

Currently, I am open in the evenings, weekdays, and Saturdays for training sessions, leaving the daytime available during weekdays to devote to fur-kiddo walks! What to expect: First, we would meet—myself, you, and your pet—for introductions and to communicate any instructions, as well as to make sure both parties feel comfortable. If everything goes well, we would confirm the schedule and starting date.

Safety, trust & environment

WALKS will be in and around your neighborhood, depending on the conditions and environment. If the situation dictates, I would be able to transport your pet to a park or area that might suit the pet better for walks, exercise, and training, if desired. If a dog prefers to exercise in their own yard as opposed to walking, I could certainly accommodate this. TRAINING will begin with a 30-minute consultation to make sure that the we are all on the same page as to your training goals, needs, and to go over any specific issues or concerns. This would be either at your home or in a neutral area like a local park. If all parties are comfortable with pursuing further training, we would meet at a convenient time for hour-long sessions at your home. Drop-In Visits will follow the instructions communicated at our first meeting. At that time, I will ask about and follow the rules, boundaries, and expectations set out for the household. I'm used to crate training, but can be flexible. If a dog needs special treatment or training, such as puppies, young adults, seniors, or those recovering from ailments, or those with other special needs, please let me know and I will be able to accommodate them. When working with puppies and young adults, I may ask if I could use treats or a favorite activity to promote and reward good behavior.

A typical day

Whether at a Training Session, Drop-In Visit or Walk, I hope to give each dog their own special attention and respect. We'll start with a calm greeting, followed by a check of the dog and their space to make sure everything is well and safe, and then to a walk or activity previously agreed upon by the client. Training Sessions will be conducted very differently, as the client and I will be working together with their dog. Much of the work done will be required of the client, so wear comfortable clothing! I can demonstrate timing and technique, but most of the work will be for the client to practice with their pup in order to practice under supervision the tricks, cues, and techniques, along with the timing and communication. During a walk, it will be up to how the dog is feeling on that day as to what activities we'll do. We could do a simple potty run, a full walk, or some fun activities at the park. We can also do some activities like a searching or basic nose work to stimulate the mind, as well as the body. Or we could do some basic obedience and/or agility to exercise the mind and body, as well as having a bit of fun. Some dogs prefer to be rewarded by treats, while others prefer toys, or are toy-driven. Depending on your dog, we'll try to reward them after the walk with whichever they prefer, or simply with some calm affection. I will always try to leave the dogs in a calm state to promote a positive separation period.

Please let me know the general routine, diet, and exercise requirements of your pup. Are there any physical or mental requirements that I should be aware of? Are there any medical issues that your dog may have? Please let me know if your dog can eat any treats or receive rewards while being watched (many times I use their own kibble dog food as treats). How do you generally handle your pup? Is your pup crate trained or not? What is your fur-baby's personality? Your pooch's likes or dislikes? And finally (for Training Sessions), what are your concerns, issues, and goals for our training sessions?
