I work from a hybrid schedule and Calob is home full time. We get outside first thing in the morning, as needed through the day, and before bed. We also have a fully enclosed patio, and when the weather is nice, the dogs can go in and out as long as one of the humans is on the patio too. Between walks, the dogs play, nap, or hang out with us while we work on projects, read, and play D&D. Most of our house has low or floor seating, and dogs are allowed on the furniture, so it's easy for the dogs to join us for some attention or playtime!

Safety, trust & environment

Pets in our home are always required to be vaccinated (exceptions considered for young puppies, our dogs is up to date). Disabled, senior, and chronically ill pets with nothing transmittable are welcome! Dog toys and beds are run through a wash cycle between visitors. We have lots of food and water bowls (run through the dishwasher between visitors). My dog normally has access to his food any time, and gets dinner with some chicken broth or fresh food topper, but can easily switch to a schedule to accommodate guests. Dogs who are on a schedule or protective of their food are fed in separate rooms with gates up or doors closed. New environments and people can be exciting or stressful for even well-mannered, friendly, dogs, so we monitor visitors for signs of stress, and do our best to keep them engaged and feeling safe. It's normal for pups to eat a bit more or less in a new place. I always update owners on unusual eating habits but don't worry about it as long as it's only a few days and they are still drinking water normally and otherwise seem healthy. We also have plenty of spare harnesses, and all new dogs who don't have one of their own will be fitted for one for their walks. They don't wear them around the house, but a harness is safer for dogs who get overly excited and lunge or may slip out of a collar, and even the best-behaved dogs can test boundaries with new people, especially the smart ones! We always have treats for after walks and before bed, if your dog has any dietary restrictions on treats please let us know!

Information Heather & Calob James D. would like to know about your pet

I would love to know what your dog’s energy levels, favorite activities, and stress/aggression triggers are. What does their routine usually look like, and do they need to stick to it? Are they working on any commands or behavior training that needs reinforced? Please provide any special equipment, food, or medication they need. We have plenty of beds, bowls, and toys available. For drop-ins or walks, we are happy to work with large active dogs and dogs with dog-aggression/anxiety, but for boarding, they do need to be able to get along with my dogs.

A typical day

BOARDING Dogs staying at the house will love the variety of surfaces to nap on and toys to play with! We get barkbox every month, so we have toys in many sizes and durability levels, and destruction is inevitable, don't worry, we will have more! During the week, dogs get fed and walked in the morning around 7:00 am, will be taken out as often as needed between for potty breaks or short walks until their last bedtime walk. Dogs have lots of time to play, cuddle, and explore the walking trails with us, or just do their own thing around the house - we are pretty low-key and don't go out a lot. Dogs are allowed all over the house and on the furniture. Trash and food (for humans and dogs) are safely kept out of dog range in cabinets or the pantry, and we have a gate as an extra barrier between dogs and the kitchen. While we're running errands, puppies, new visitors, and known-chewers will typically be kept in the guest room so they have room to play but limited access to things they shouldn't chew on, and aren't unsupervised with our dog. More mature visitors are free to roam the house and play with our dog. We have a kennel available and dogs are free to get cozy in it. Our dog doesn't use it, and we keep the door propped open unless a visitor is kennel trained/training and needs to stick to their routine. WALKING AND DROP INS: Calob is available most days/times, I have a hybrid schedule and am typically available evenings and weekends.

Experienced Pet Companionship

Pet care experience

I (Heather) grew up with dogs, cats, and weird exotic fish, and have either owned or volunteered with dogs and other pets for my whole life, starting with my grandad's springer spaniel when I was a baby, up through the dog I have now! I volunteered with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa for 10 years as a dog walker, small animal companion, adoption counselor, and intake specialist - assessing dogs for temperament and placement recommendations. I was also a volunteer instructor for the Red Cross and taught first aid for both humans and pets. Calob has also owned a variety of dogs and exotic pets, is a life-long dog owner, and has experience breeding and training therapy dogs and caring for senior and disabled dogs. We love dogs and would adopt all of them if we could, but for now, we're happy to supplement our one-dog household with pets who need a cozy place to stay while their owners travel or have other obligations! I have a weight limit on visitors, we don't have enough space for large and energetic dogs to get enough activity to stay entertained. We are happy to make exceptions for senior and/or disabled dogs of any size. Churro (around age 5?) is a chihuaha-shiba -mystery mix. He can be loud, but it's just excitement. He is happy to play with other energetic dogs. He is very respectful (and sometimes protective) of senior, lower energy, and disabled dogs, having lived with our senior corgi until Chase passed in 2026. He will entertain himself with toys or people if the other dogs are not interested in playing with him.

They did a great job making our dog comfortable when we dropped him off, even though he can be a little bit anxious. They took him for walks and made him feel comfortable. They also responded very quickly and were on time for everything.

Heather and Calob were great. They seemed really knowledgeable about dogs, were very flexible in their schedules, and, most importantly, took great care of my 5-month-old puppy when I needed someone to watch her for a couple days while I was at work. I will definitely be using their services again.

Saved my butt when traveling through the region and needed a dog sitter for the day. My Jef was happy and comfortable, and I could tell he had affection for Heather when we left.
