When I'm house-sitting, I make it a priority to keep things as close to the dog's normal routine as possible, since I know changes in environment can be unsettling even when their owner's home is familiar to them. I follow the existing feeding schedule, walk times, and any specific habits or preferences the dog is used to, so their day-to-day life feels as consistent as it can while their owner is away. I spend plenty of time with the dog throughout the day — playing, walking, and simply being present — rather than leaving them alone for long stretches, since I know that company and attention matter just as much as the practical care. I'm also comfortable adapting to dogs of different ages and temperaments, having looked after both younger, more energetic dogs and older dogs who need a calmer, gentler approach. Alongside caring for the dog, I treat the owner's home with the same respect I'd want for my own — keeping things tidy, respecting their space, and making sure everything is exactly as they left it for when they return.
