Specializing in Golden Retrievers

We are an active retired couple who have had many dogs, and are available to care for your pet in our home. Our typical schedule with our 9 year old, part Golden Retriever, Rosie, includes an early morning walk in the Wissahickon Park which is a few hundred feet from our home. Midday we head back to the park or take a ride to Bluebell Hill or an enclosed dog park in Gladwyn, depending on weather, crowds, etc. Shorter walks are planned as needed. Swimming, play and fetching are always an adventure option. Fran has done volunteer work at a shelter, dealing with walking and caring for all sorts of dogs, large and small. Curtis grew up on a small farm with many animals. We will work with you and your preferences about your dog’s behavior and needs. Just let us know if your pup has thunder or separation anxiety, or other behavior issues. A certificate of health and vet info are a must to assure a happy and healthy stay Chez Read. We are most familiar with Golden Retrievers and crazy Old English Sheepdogs but love dogs in general. Our dog Rosie must be comfortable with your pup and of course you and your pet should feel the same about us! We will go through a questionnaire with you to better understand your dog’s history and routine. Photo updates will be gladly provided while your dog is on vacation. Our goal is to enjoy, understand and provide a happy vacation for your dog. Older pets are welcomed, but we do have stairs and cannot do heavy lifting. If your dog is high energy and pulls hard on the lead, the dog park is a must as we do not have an enclosed back yard. Our last Golden Retriever was a challenging rescue, very active until he passed at 11 and we miss him very much. He was our 4th Golden Retriever. Currently we have the time, energy and compassion for more dogs. One of us is usually at home to be with the dogs.

Thank you again for a wonderful stay! We love sending Lucy to “summer camp”, with daily trail walks, swimming, social time with Rosie, etc. We know she always receives excellent care from Fran!

Our pup is always in good hands with Fran and Curtis! They are incredibly knowledgeable about dogs and dog behavior, and are incredibly patient with our reactive senior. I enjoy the photo updates and feel better when I am away knowing that our dog is in their care.

Fran and Curtis are the best! All logistics were easy and most importantly our dog Hobbes clearly was having as good a time during his stay with them as we were on our vacation! So no Dog-mom guilt ❤️. I hope we have the opportunity to use them in the future.

Fran and Curtis took the best care of our dog Joey. They sent me lots of pictures, took him out on hikes and he played with lots of other dogs. We will definitely be calling Fran whenever we go out of town again.

Fran and Curtis watched our not quite 2 year old golden retriever for several days. They made her feel right at home. Walks in the park and visits to the dog park helped our pup expend all her energy. They communicated with us on a regular basis so we knew our pup was happy and comfortable. We will definitely us Fran and Curtis to watch our dog again in the future.

We are retired and flexible so your pet’s care is our priority. We plan so that one of us is home during your pet’s stay, unless unusual circumstances arise.

Where your pet will stay

Non-smoking household
Has 1 dog
No children present

Safety, trust & environment

Ideally, your pet will have more fun than you! Sometimes it takes a day for dogs to settle in and relax. We give lots of walks and attention, while being mindful of the health and safety of your dog. We worry and think about “what if” to avoid problems.

Pets

A typical day

Depending on your instructions we travel to great enclosed parks or open dog parks, such as Bluebell Hill, walk some trails, provide access to small streams mostly in the Wissahickon Park system.

We need information about your dog’s health, any reactive behavior and how they walk on lead. A questionnaire will be provided. Some young large excitable dogs are more than we can handle and might be happier with a sitter who has an enclosed yard.
Each sitter joining Rover needs to pass a background check. And by booking on Rover, you can get photo & message updates, 24/7 support, and reimbursement for eligible vet care.
