My mother worked for a dog rescue when I was in high school and I helped care for hundreds of dogs of all shapes and sizes for many years both in my own home and in other people's homes. I also worked at a pet supplies store for over four years, which included learning a great deal of knowledge about pet nutrition, safety, grooming, etc. along with spending most days a week interacting with dogs of all shapes and sizes. As a result, I generally have a pretty good sense for when a pet is uncomfortable or afraid and I've been in situations before where I was able to calm down an anxious pet and actually get them to like me by the end of it. I've also owned two different cats over the last 10 years, both with very different personalities and temperaments and while I have more experience with dogs, I definitely consider myself more of a cat person! I've been dog walking for many years and have made some great relationships with many dogs and cats (and their humans)!
