Pet care experience

Lively young adult, pet enthusiast!

Ever since I was old enough to walk around on my own, we have had pets in my household. I got my very own dog when I was 6 years old, and have had constant experience with them since then, so around 12 years. I have pet sat friends and family members’ pets before, including cats. Mostly, I love pets! They really make our lives better in so many ways.

Safety, trust & environment

I can feed pets, let them out, walk them, play with them, you name it! I currently have three dogs of my own who are senior citizens (11yrs), so I have experience with young and old pets.

I normally do not leave negative reviews, and I truly appreciate anyone willing to help care for animals while owners are away. However, I was disappointed with part of my experience. Before leaving for my camping trip, I specifically explained multiple times that the gate between our kitchen and living room needed to remain closed at all times. I explained the reasons clearly — one of our male French Bulldogs marks, and because Frenchies are prone to back injuries, we also try to prevent unnecessary jumping on furniture, especially when unattended. While checking in through our home cameras during the trip, I noticed the gate had been left open and the dogs were in the living room unattended. Unfortunately, my dog ended up marking on our couch and other furniture. What upset me most was the risk this created for my dog’s health and safety. A back injury in a French Bulldog can be extremely serious, painful, and potentially very expensive to treat. This situation could have been avoided by simply following the instructions provided. I understand mistakes happen, but when caring for someone’s pets, especially breeds with specific medical concerns, it’s very important that instructions are followed carefully. I also was surprised that during the entire four and half days we were away, I never received a single picture or update of the dogs. I found myself having to reach out to Emily to check in and see how things were going. Maybe that is just not part of how she runs her business, but personally, I think most pet owners would appreciate occasional “pupdates” for peace of mind while away from their babies. Even a quick photo or short text update would have gone a long way in helping us feel reassured that they were safe, comfortable, and doing well. This was my first experience with Rover and it was a little unexpected.
