I Can't Wait to spoil your Cat/Dog

Pet care experience

I love Dogs and Cats and would love to help you when you are tied up or have to go away. It is much less stressful for your pet to stay in his/her home than to be brought to a strange place. I will travel to your home and do all kinds of care for you pet including walking, feeding, and of course pottying. I do have 2 dogs of my own so though I couldn't stay at your house overnight, we can definitely work something out so your beloved pet is not left alone all night without being checked on. I have been around dogs all my life. Our family dog, a border collie mix, was rescued by my dad when I was only a baby so we grew up together. When she had to go to the bridge at 14 due to arthritis, we rescued a Sheltie/Malamute puppy, Lady was a great dog with lots of energy. She surprised us when she went into her first heat at 7 and gave us puppies. I was an adult then and had moved away so I took one of the puppies and named it Shadow. Sadly Lady was hit by a car that same year but Shadow lived up to her name, but, also taught me patience on how to deal with separation anxiety. She lived to be 15 1/2 and never stopped being my Shadow until that last day. I was heartbroken. but knew she would want me to save another dog. A few months later after searching on petfinder, I found Yankee and Canuck at a shelter in PA where they had lived their whole 3 years. They came to greet me more like kangaroos than dogs because they had never been taught obedience of any kind and sadly they didn't know what a toy was. It took some time, love and patience but soon my dogs were well loved by everyone who met them because they were so well behaved in public and just so sweet. Yankee taught me patience on dealing with a dog with noise anxieties like Fireworks and thunder. He was so petrified that he destroyed walls and doors as he tried to find a way to escape. Then in August of 2013, I found my little Karma at a shelter in NC. I wanted a Pit Bull advocate and he fits the part perfectly. His mom was confiscated and he is half Pit and half Shepherd so we are pretty sure he was bred to be a fighting dog. Karma was raised in a strictly positive environment with lots of hugs, cuddles and kisses and not allowed to bite even in teething except on his toys. That has made him into a huge mushball which proves that training does mean everything and I have become pretty good at it. Karma now weighs over 100 pounds so I'm used to dealing with large dogs along with small dogs. Karma became leash reactive to dogs when he was younger so I quickly had to start a training program for him to solve that issue. It took about a year but he can now greet other dogs in public without lunging at them. If you have a reactive dog, I can help give you pointers that worked for him and also help you with other obedience issues. When I lost Yankee and Canuck in 2018, I needed to give Karma another canine friend. In 2029, we drove to NC to adopt Legacy. They didnt tell me that she was scared of the world but she was. Her sweetness made up for it though. Then Covid hit, making it even harder on her to be socialized. But thankfully in 2021, I got her to swim and she loves it. She began dock diving in 2022 and in 2023, she got brave enough to start consistently jumping. Crowds are still scary though so Competition is very scary since there are so many people but she has come so far that I think, that working together to build her confidence, she will compete some day. In the past 10+ years, I have become very active in the dog world especially doing agility for fun and then dock diving. It has allowed me to meet and be around all types of dogs with all kinds of personalities and I love them all from puppies to middle aged dogs to the so precious seniors. I have never met a dog I didn't fall in love with. I am very used to administrating medications and I know how to care for an older dog who doesn't move easily, can't navigate stairs well, etc. Let's not forget the cats! Cats can be very independent but they have needs too. If you are traveling out of town or need to be away and hate leaving kitty alone, I'm the perfect person to hire. I can stop in early mornings to feed and change the water bowl and drop back in during the evening to do a night time feeding and change the water again and of course keep the litter box cleaned. If your cat likes the attention from a stranger, I would love to play with him or her and spend some cuddling time so they don't miss you too terribly. I had a diabetic cat that I kept alive for 10 years with insulin so I'm very familiar with giving shots and I can even pill a cat. Regardless of what precious baby I take care of for you, I love giving updates during my visit and I will even take pictures and either text or email them so you can see them while you are away. I know how much I miss mine when I'm not with them so I would treat your baby like I would want mine to be treated.

We rarely need a cat sitter but this time we were gone for almost a week. Darlene was very caring, even though our cat is very shy, and she came every day as requested.

Darlene is a wonderful pet sitter! We have a very nervous cat and Darlene helped keep him (and us) calm during our first long trip away from him in the pandemic. Darlene kept us up to date with how he was doing and sent many pictures. Our cat has a previous medical condition that Darlene helped monitor. We will definitely book Darlene again when we need another cat sitter!

Safety, trust & environment

I am always shocked at the amount of people who have lost dogs while caring for them. I am used to a hundred pound dog so my arms are strong. I will use a slip leash on a dog I worry could slip a collar. My focus is totally on your pet while it is in my care. I have never lost control of a dog as I am very responsible and also watch the dog body language.

Information Darlene S. would like to know about your pet

Any leash aggression? Any resource guarding? Any behavior issues? Any allergics? Any food restrictions? Anything the owner feels is important for me to know? I have had to learn how to deal with pretty much any issue a dog can have and always have found a way to help make it better but I would want to know up front that it might be an issue. I love all dogs and have no breed preferences.

A typical day

Your dog and I will have so much fun walking together. I love talking to a dog as I walk it and I let the dog sniff things and just be a dog. If there is an open area nearby, I have a long leash that I can attach and play ball/fetch with your dog so it gets a little extra exercise that sometimes a walk doesn't quite do. Your dog will be happy when we get home and be ready for a nap.
