As a vet student, my course requires me to gain work experience with the animals I wish to work with in the future. Some of my placements so far have at me doing volunteer work at kennels and catteries where I would clean out the boarding spaces, feed the pets and walk the dogs. I also did some volunteer work at a doggie daycare where I would watch over, feed and play with the dogs there. While at the kennels and catteries I also learned the basics in senior care as well as puppy/kitten care. I have a Level 4 Certificate in Small Mammal First Aid and I have animal handling certificates for dogs and cats from my university. These courses mean I understand body language e.g. if they want space, as well as how to care for them in a situation where something may happen. I have also had my own dog since the age of 12, so growing up with one makes me aware of all the quirks they have and what makes dogs and cats great companions. My own dog recently, unfortunately broke her leg. Through caring for her post op as she’s been healing has helped me expand my knowledge on how best to care for animals that may have special needs. Whether it be due to injury or a chronic condition. (Total experience through my placements add up to around 3 years)
