Pet care experience

Passionate animal care

Hi! My name is Candice, and I have over 25 years of hands-on animal care experience, along with volunteer experience with an animal rescue organization. Caring for animals has been a lifelong passion, not just a job. I have extensive experience caring for: • Dogs and cats of all breeds, ages, and temperaments • Horses, cows, pigs, and chickens • Rabbits, hamsters, and gerbils • Birds • Reptiles, including chameleons • Freshwater and saltwater fish My rescue background has given me strong skills working with shy, anxious, senior, and special-needs animals, as well as pets that need extra patience, structure, and reassurance. She took great care of my dog while I was away, and I had no concerns about my dog's care. However, I did have some concerns regarding the care of my two cats. I specifically asked that one of my cats' water cup on the sink be kept full because that is the only way that cat will drink water. When I returned, the cup was empty. A friend also stopped by during the trip and found the cats' food bowls empty. Since my cats are free-fed and normally have enough food to last at least two days, this was concerning. When I asked the sitter about it, she said she had fed them the day before, so I can't say for certain what happened. I had also specifically asked for the litter boxes to be scooped daily, and based on a photo my friend sent me during the trip, they did not appear to have been scooped recently. Overall, I appreciate that my dog was well cared for, but I was disappointed and concerned about the apparent inconsistencies with the cats' food, water, and litter box care.

Schedule

Pet care fits naturally into my daily routine because caring for animals has been a consistent part of my life for over 25 years. I structure my schedule to allow dedicated time for walks, drop-ins, feeding routines, playtime, and check-ins so each pet receives attentive, unrushed care. Throughout the week, I prioritize reliability and flexibility to accommodate different pet schedules, whether that means morning walks, midday visits, evening care, or overnight stays. I also build in time for communication and updates so pet parents feel informed and confident while they’re away. Because animal care is something I genuinely enjoy, it’s not something I “fit in” — it’s something I intentionally plan my day around.

Safety, trust & environment

My care approach is always tailored to each pet’s routine, personality, and comfort level. Whether I’m caring for pets in a client’s home or providing drop-ins and walks, I focus on consistency, safety, and creating a calm environment. In a client’s home, I follow all instructions closely, including feeding schedules, medications, litter or habitat maintenance, exercise, and enrichment. I respect the home as if it were my own and aim to keep pets on their normal routine so they feel secure and stress-free. I also provide regular updates and photos so pet parents can feel confident while they’re away. During walks and drop-in visits, I prioritize safety, awareness of surroundings, and positive interaction. Walks are customized to the pet’s energy level, and visits include playtime, potty breaks, fresh water, feeding if needed, and companionship. With over 25 years of experience and animal rescue volunteer work, I’m comfortable caring for pets of all temperaments, as well as small animals, reptiles, and farm animals when needed. My goal is always to provide reliable, compassionate care so pets feel comfortable and loved in their familiar environment.

Pets

A typical day

I love keeping pets mentally and physically engaged while making sure activities match their personality, age, and energy level. For dogs, this can include walks, playtime, enrichment games, gentle training reinforcement, and plenty of affection and companionship. High-energy dogs may enjoy longer walks or interactive play, while seniors may prefer relaxed strolls and quiet time. For cats and small animals, I incorporate interactive toys, gentle play, brushing (if they enjoy it), and calm companionship. With birds, reptiles, and other small pets, fun often means enrichment, routine interaction, and maintaining a comfortable, low-stress environment. I also enjoy providing simple enrichment like treat puzzles, sniff walks, and outdoor exploration (when appropriate and safe). My goal is always to keep pets happy, stimulated, and comfortable while staying consistent with their normal routine.

Before caring for a pet, I like to learn as much as possible about their routine, personality, and any special needs so I can provide consistent and comfortable care. Helpful details include feeding schedules, exercise preferences, medications, allergies, and any behavioral quirks or triggers. I also appreciate knowing how pets interact with new people, other animals, and different environments, as well as their comfort level with walks, handling, or grooming. For small animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, habitat setup, lighting, temperature, and feeding specifics are especially important. Understanding a pet’s favorite activities, fears, and calming routines helps me build trust quickly and keep them happy while you’re away. My goal is always to maintain their normal routine as closely as possible so they feel safe and secure.
