Having lived all over the world I returned to the UK to retire. I am available from mid March until the end of October/mid November - I don't do English winters. I am totally free of commitments and can dog sit in someone's home for one to three weeks but am flexible on dates. I prefer countryside sits in new places, Yorkshire, Lakes, Lancashire coast. I could have your dog stay with me, if I am not booked on an away stay. Only older smaller dogs to stay with me please. I live opposite the beach so plenty of space to run around and enjoy the outdoors. I love the countryside, walking, swimming, reading, creative writing and painting - so am equally as happy sitting at home quietly if your dog is more of a home body! Last year was great. I had the company of some fabulous dogs. We visited National Trust properties. Walked favourite places. Explored woods. Swam in rivers. Went on car trips. Hung around in the garden at home. Had grooming sessions and belly rubs, well that's the dogs, not me. And cuddled on the couch. I met some adorable dogs and lovely owners and visited some fantastic places. I'm hoping for more of the same this year. I absolutely love dogs and for some reason dogs always adore me, even the anxious little Lula took to me straight away.

Information Barbara B. would like to know about your pet
I prefer countryside sits with well behaved smaller dogs who get on with other dogs and people. I don't want to be dragged through hedgerows by sheep chasers. Or have my arm pulled out of joint by a cyclists snapper! I want myself and your pet to have a happy, safe, calm and enjoyable adventure together, as drama free as possible. It's great if they travel by car, we can go more places. Even better if they are good on the lead and have good recall so that they can have a good, free wild run around in safe places with other dogs. Although I'm very wary about letting dogs off their leads even when told they're good - specially designated dog fields and beaches are great. I don't drink but a good pub lunch, or a visit to a cafe, on a long walk is always nice. As I said before all dogs are different and you'll be able to fill me in on their particular quirks and character.
A typical day
Last year was fabulous, I joined the National Trust and took the dogs I was looking after to visit the gardens. We went on long river walks, the keen swimmers swam the nervous ones paddled, it was such a hot summer. I took anxious Lula on secluded woodland walks and in the heatwave convinced her that standing in the river was a nice thing to do. Mollie and Maisie loved swimming, cafe life, being adored by passing folk and during the evening watching TV, if animals featured they'd bounce around the living room, a favourite programme was 'The Dog House', I've never laughed so much in my life. Rhubarb loved being in the car, and often decided she preferred it to the walk, so she sat happily in the car and I walked, she'd even refuse to get out of the car when we got home some times! I discovered she did love being up on the Moors, so I donned 4 layers of clothes and she bounded around in the long grass. I did hiding treats, endless ball throwing, grooming sessions for the ones who liked it. And there's always lots of cuddles. Any dog staying with me will get to run on the beach opposite, watch the world go by from my living room window and come along to help at my allotment. As I dont have enclosed outside space and live in a small apartment my place is best suited for a dog happy to settle down after their walk/play on the beach. Not enough space indoors for lively young things! So only older placid little things for my small apartment please.

Pet care experience
We had a dog as children I later owned two dogs, Daisy and Bongo (in photo gallery). In Italy, where I managed a study centre, I looked after the owners dog during their winter absence. In Yorkshire I worked in the office and house of a stud farm and looked after Bonzo the office dog. Recently, for 4 years, I walked, swam and went on adventures with a lovely bearded collie, Nelson, until he died, which was heart breaking. John, his owner, has provided a reference. Last year I joined a house sitting site and had a great year. I first looked after Rhubarb, in Yorkshire. a sun worshipper who knew when she wanted to go for a walk, and when she didn't. Then it was Reggie, a one year old terrier who kept me on my toes and was an absolute character. Then it was Knaresborough with Mollie and Maisie, the cutest, sweetest most loving pair. Lula was an anxious little Tibetan terrier who liked sleeping, a lot, and going for quiet walks on Ilkley Moor and in the woods. She even decided the river was quite nice to chill in. They all feature in the rogues gallery. Two of the owners have given references.
Reviews

We could not of been any luckier with coming across Barbara, our dog Kasper took to her straight away and settled really easily. She did everything and more that we'd of hoped for, to which saw Kasper cuddle up to her... Something he doesn't do often!! We will definitely be using their expertise again
Barbara walked my dog for 4 years during which time she was 100% reliable and trustworthy. My dog loved Barbara, he could be difficult to handle occasionally but his behaviour on the lead improved within the first few months. Barbara also taught him to swim after fearing water for many years. He would stay at Barbara’s house whenever I went away and there was never a problem.
Barbara was an excellent Housesitter. There was good communication both before and during the sit. She adored the dogs who were very taken with her. The house was left exactly as we left it and she was a delight to have around. I’d have no hesitation in recommending Barbara as a pet and house sitter.
We could not have been luckier than having Barbara to house sit for us. She could not have been a more perfect companion for our dog Lula who can be rather grumpy but took to Barbara straight away. Barbara is incredibly upbeat and positive with a genuine enthusiasm for new pets and places. We found her to be absolutely trustworthy and were very comfortable leaving our home and pet in her hands. We returned to a very clean and tidy house and a pet who had obviously had lots of fun walks and companionship. We recommend Barbara without hesitation.
