I currently work from home as an animal caretaker and artist. I am happy to have an excuse to get away from my desk to go for a walk or play tug. I love the company of animals, and certainly appreciate the exercise! When we all tire ourselves out I go back to painting, or indulge in a coffee break on the couch. I spend quite a bit of time in the garden, so guests can snooze on the porch while I plant and prune in the sun.

VISITING YOUR HOME: I like to do a meet and greet with your pets before I'm due to take care of them so that you can introduce me and they can get used to me coming into their home. At this time you can walk me through your space and expectations so we're on the same page. I take safety seriously and do my utmost to leave your space as I found it. Relevant things to share with me: is your pet a flight risk? Are they aggressive with strangers? Do they have a particular hiding spot? What's their favorite activity or treat? Are there any quirks or hazards in your space that I need to know about? Are there mail, packages, or plants you're needing me to look out for? BOARDING AT MY HOME: I live in a quiet house with a fenced backyard and dog door, perfect for playing, exploring or napping! My own dog, Theo, is an active 12-year-old dachshund mix who delights in having other dogs to chase or cuddle with. Theo has otherwise been a fantastic companion and playmate for countless clients over the past eleven years - accompanying me for walks, hikes, and sleepovers. ***July 2024: Theo was recently injured and has to be careful about roughhousing. He will not take kindly to being manhandled or jumped on.*** For everyone's safety: - vaccinations and flea/tick treatment must be up to date - dogs are fed separately from one another (unless they live together) - no off-leash walks - no retractable leashes. Being away from home is stressful and accidents do happen. Please let me know beforehand if you think your pet is prone to accidents or is not fully potty trained so that we can plan accordingly. Repeated accidents (when staying at my house) may result in a cleaning fee. I provide lots of toys and balls to play with and it's common for them to be destroyed in the process. That's okay! I want the dogs to have fun here. However if your pet damages or destroys other personal property while staying with me I will ask to be reimbursed when possible. Thank you for your understanding!

Information Avery R. would like to know about your pet

Let me know what sorts of rules you have at home! What are you working on? I want to positively reinforce training and be consistent with your rules. Do they have a favorite toy or treat? What's their energy level? Are they dog or people social? Where do they usually like to sleep? For my dog's safety and yours I require that all dogs to be up to date on their vaccines and flea/tick/heartworm medication. If for whatever reason your dog is not, please let me know as soon as possible so alternative arrangements can be made.

A typical day

I generally wake up between 7 and 8am and enjoy my coffee while the dogs eat breakfast. Dogs always have access to the backyard to go potty but sometimes designated morning walks are necessary as well. Depending on the day I'll spend a few hours working from home or visiting my regular clients around town. In the afternoon I have lunch, tidy the house, and spend time gardening . Some dogs like to join me outside for a thorough sniff and sunbathing while I work, and others prefer to nap on the couch inside ?. Depending on the energy and needs of the dogs staying with me I will play games, make enrichment, administer medication, or go for a long walk. I walk anywhere up to four miles by the river most days, adjusting for the needs of the animals in my care. After dinner I like to paint, watch a show with my partner, or play games. One last potty check before bed and then we settle in for the night. Some dogs like to sleep on the couch, while others prefer their dog bed or to be in my bed with me. I don't mind as long as they're comfortable!

Pet care experience

Full-time animal caretaker! I have been devoted to learning about animals (particularly dogs) since I was little, reading everything I could get my hands on. First I volunteered at shelters, then in high school I started pet-sitting and I learned how to train service dogs. In college I fostered dogs for various rescue groups while I continued to work as a dog-walker. By the time I was in graduate school I had become the local shelter's default medical foster; I was entrusted with medicating and completing physical therapy with post-surgery clients who needed to recover outside the shelter environment. I am very familiar with giving medication, watching for signs of distress, and caring for older animals.
