Pet care experience

Experienced dog carer who loves hiking

I had a much-loved family dog for 12 years, and since then I’ve regularly cared for dogs belonging to friends and family. This includes everything from long walks to feeding, company, and general care. I’m confident handling dogs of different sizes and temperaments and always aim to follow their usual routine to help them feel comfortable and settled. As a full-time teacher, I don’t currently have a dog of my own, as I wouldn’t be able to give them the full-time attention they deserve. However, I’m available on weekends and during school holidays and really enjoy the opportunity to spend time with dogs whenever I can. I’m reliable, attentive, and always happy to provide updates so you can feel at ease while you’re away.

Austin was fantastic at looking after our cocker spaniel Ralph. He was really organized, sent us loads of updates throughout his stay and made sure he was really well looked after. We will absolutely be using him again.

Austin has looked after my dog Frank multiple times and he’s great with him. Frank loves him! Austin is confident and patient with him. He’s a dog lover and it shows with the way he cares for Frank. I have full confidence recommending Austin to look after your furry friend!

Austin has always been amazing, responsible and caring when walking or sitting our dog benny, I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a trustworthy and compassionate pet sitter. He has taken excellent care of benny on multiple occasions. Benny is a loving staffy cross, but is also not the easiest to look after as he is strong, boisterous and lead-reactive, and Austin has always handled him with confidence, patience, and care. What makes Austin stand out is not only his ability to make us feel confident in benny's care and safety, but also the genuine love he shows for dogs. From our experience we know he is attentive to each dog’s individual needs and creates an enriching, loving environment that allows them to feel secure and meet their needs (even if they are more complex like our boy!). Austin is also wonderfully reliable—he is responsive to messages, polite, and very organized. I always have peace of mind knowing that Benny is in such capable hands when Austin is looking after him, can't recommend him highly enough!

I have known Austin for almost a decade now and he has always been a dog lover. He has looked after my dog Luca multiple times, and she loves him. He is the kind of person dogs gravitate towards due to his playful and kind nature and you will be able to enjoy your time away from your dog knowing that they are being cared for properly. Highly recommend Austin for your dogs next staycation!

Schedule

As a full-time teacher, my availability is mostly during school holidays and some weekends. While I can’t commit to every weekend, I do my best to respond to requests as quickly as possible and will always be upfront about my availability. During school breaks, I’m often free and happy to help, unless I’m away myself. If you’re planning ahead, feel free to get in touch — I’m always happy to see if I can help.

Safety, trust & environment

Dogs in my care are treated like part of the family. At home, they’re welcome to relax on the sofas (with a blanket to keep things clean and cosy), and they’ll always have plenty of attention and company. We have a small, unfenced back garden, so dogs are never left outside unsupervised. I live in a quiet residential area close to several local parks and green spaces, with some fantastic walking routes just a short drive away — including Roundhay Park, Hetchell Woods, and the Harewood loop. I always prioritise safety on walks, keeping dogs on lead unless agreed otherwise and suited to the environment. You can trust that your dog will be well cared for, kept secure, and given lots of exercise and enrichment.

A typical day

A typical day includes plenty of fresh air, exercise, and companionship. I usually start with a morning walk to stretch legs and get the day going. Around midday, we head out for a longer walk — often exploring some of the fantastic nearby routes like Roundhay Park, Hetchell Woods, Golden Acre Park, the Harewood loop, or parts of the new Leeds Orbital Route, depending on your dog’s needs and energy levels. In the evening, there’s usually a shorter, relaxed walk before settling in at home. Dogs have plenty of time to rest between walks, with a calm environment, access to water, and lots of company throughout the day. Walks and routines can be adjusted to suit individual dogs — whether they prefer a slower pace, more frequent breaks, or extra playtime.

To make sure your dog is safe, comfortable, and well cared for, it’s really helpful to know a few key things in advance: • Behaviour and temperament – including whether they’re nervous or reactive, how they respond to other dogs, and if they’ve ever shown signs of aggression (e.g. biting or guarding). • Walking preferences – how much exercise they usually get, if they’re used to lead walks or being off-lead (with recall), and how they behave in busy areas or around wildlife. • Travel needs – how they cope in the car, whether they need a crate, harness, or other transport arrangements, and what they’re used to. • Feeding routine – including food type, quantity, timing, and any allergies or intolerances. • Medical information – any existing health conditions, medication, injuries, or anything I should watch out for. • Home routine – where they usually sleep, if they’re crate trained, if they’re allowed on furniture, and how they tend to settle when left alone. • Emergency contacts – including your vet details and anything else you think I should know to give them the best possible care. I’ll always follow your instructions closely and want to make sure your dog feels safe and relaxed while you’re away.
Each sitter joining Rover needs to pass a background check. And by booking on Rover, you can get photo & message updates, 24/7 support, and reimbursement for eligible vet care.
