Ashley is a very responsible person, especially when it comes to pets. In her younger years, she was often the main caretaker for the family cats. Along with meeting the basic needs of the cats, she has always been wonderful about understanding the cats’ emotional needs and their routines. Ashley often assumes a mother role with pets, and trained our childhood cats to play fetch, alert her when they need food and water (if the need was not already anticipated), and roll over. She is great at gauging the personal preferences of pets and adjusting her care and routine as needed. She has such a big heart and that has always been reflected with the happiness of pets and animals around her. One time when we were in elementary school, me, Ashley, and our other sister found a squirrel laying on the ground near a group of ants. Ashley immediately thought about trying to save the squirrel without picking it up, to prevent human touch from separating the squirrel and its mother. Ashley then called the school’s science teacher, who had cared for many species of animals, and asked what to do. We then observed the squirrel and checked to see if their mother was nearby while getting the essentials needed to properly transport the squirrel to a place for rehabilitation. We were able to get the squirrel to our science teacher, who was much better equipped to care for the squirrel than a few 7 year olds. The squirrel unfortunately passed about a week later, but stayed in good care and safe place for longer than if Ashley hadn’t intervened. This caring instinct shown at such a young age proves Ashley’s responsibility and critical thinking when it comes to taking care of pets and animals.
