Pet care experience

Loving home caring for small breeds

We offer a calm, loving home-from-home experience for small breeds, where your dog will be cared for as part of our family. We are a family of four with two children aged 9 and 14, as well as two dachshunds and two cats. Our home has a secure garden, plenty of space to relax, and local walking routes nearby. As we both work from home, your pet will receive regular care, attention and companionship throughout the day. We have extensive experience with animal behaviour and have been fostering dogs and cats for over 10 years. We are passionate about supporting both pets and their owners, and we are particularly well-equipped to care for dogs who experience separation anxiety or who may need a little extra patience while settling into a new environment. When you book our services through Rover, your pet is covered by the Rover Guarantee. In addition, we hold our own pet business public liability insurance for extra peace of mind. I have completed a Canine First Aid course and hold a 4-star Colchester Council home boarding licence. Our home has been inspected, and we meet higher animal welfare standards for caring for dogs in a family home environment. We ask that all owners have appropriate pet insurance in place to cover any unexpected health issues or veterinary care. We also require all pets to be up to date with flea and worming treatments before their stay. For all new boarding requests, we ask that a meet and greet is completed in advance. For stays longer than three days, and in line with my boarding licence requirements, dogs must also complete an overnight trial stay before their booking can begin. This helps ensure your dog is comfortable in our home environment and settles well with our family, pets and daily routine. Owners will also be asked to provide their preferred veterinary details and complete a consent form confirming that they are happy for us to seek veterinary care on their behalf if needed, particularly if we are unable to contact them while their dog is in our care.

What can I say... I knew from the get go that Annabel was a great match to dog sit my Bella. So welcoming and knowledgeable. Plus 2 doggy frie ds to play with. Bella had the best time and she was there the whole day. We had trouble getting g transport home but I knew Bella was well looked after. I would highly recommend Rover for looking after dogs in a home setting. So much better than a kennel. My baby Bella had the best time ever and made new friends to boot. If you need a sitter go see Annabel o. ROVER!!!. Me and Bella can vouch for that 100%

First time on rover. Had a meet and greet to see if the dogs would be okay. Left our Chase for a few hours and had messages and photo updates as well as an overview on his stay. He clearly had a great time, lots of snuggles and some walks. Thank you so much x

Annabel was amazing with my little dog, Albert. She was able to accommodate my booking at short notice and arranged a meet & greet beforehand, which really put me at ease. This was my first time using Rover, and with an anxious dog, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm so glad I chose both the service and Annabel. She took great care of Albert, and I felt completely reassured throughout. I'll definitely be booking with Annabel again in the near future. Thank you so much!

Dickie had a fab time, again! Thanks so much for looking after our lad. It really does give us peace of mind when we are away, knowing he’s having a lovely time with you and the family x

Annabel was very friendly from the start. Straight away I felt comfortable when we first met on our get together prior to our booking. Whilst looking after our girls, Annabel sent numerous photos whilst out and about and at home. I would thoroughly recommend Annabel and will definitely book her again to look after my girls

Schedule

Your dog will be warmly welcomed into our family home and included as part of our everyday routine. My husband Daniel and I both work full time, with around 80% of our working week spent at home, so there is usually someone at home throughout the day. Our routine is built around family life, school runs and daily commitments, which means your dog will have plenty of companionship, supervision and reassurance during their stay. While in our care, your dog can expect daily walks, supervised garden time, regular toilet breaks, playtime, calm enrichment and plenty of rest. We also make sure dogs are fed separately, have access to fresh water, and are given quiet spaces to settle and relax when needed. We tailor each stay to suit your dog’s age, health, personality and usual routine. This includes adjusting walks, rest periods and activities for puppies, older dogs or dogs who need a little extra support. We always take time to understand each dog’s likes, dislikes, feeding routine, toileting needs, behaviour and any special requirements, so we can make their stay as settled, safe and enjoyable as possible.

Safety, trust & environment

We usually only accept dogs from one client household at a time, allowing us to provide a calmer, more personal stay with careful introductions, close supervision and plenty of individual attention. The only exception would be if we have cared for your dog before and feel they may be a suitable match with another dog. This would only ever be considered after careful consultation and agreement with both owners. We will never mix dogs from different households unless we are confident it is safe, appropriate and in the best interests of all dogs involved. We have a maximum of four dogs in our home at any time, including our two resident dogs. Safety is always my priority. Dogs in my care are walked on lead unless I feel it is completely safe to do otherwise. Where suitable, I may use a retractable lead so your dog still has space to sniff and explore while remaining secure. Until I am fully confident that your dog has reliable recall with me, I believe the safest option is for them to stay on lead. At home, we have a secure fenced garden for supervised outdoor time and a relaxed indoor space where dogs can feel comfortable. Dogs are welcome on the furniture if this is part of their usual routine, and we also have dog beds, play pens for puppy's and crates available for dogs who are already crate-trained. We will always follow your guidance around sleeping arrangements, boundaries, feeding, walks and routines, so your dog’s stay feels as familiar and settled as possible. My own dogs enjoy friendly play, so where appropriate, your dog can also enjoy friendly interaction, cuddles, quiet time and plenty of reassurance.

Pets

A typical day

A typical day in our home is calm, structured and tailored to each dog’s needs. We start the day with a garden toilet break, fresh water and breakfast, with dogs fed separately so mealtimes stay relaxed and stress-free. Your dog will enjoy daily local walks, adjusted to their age, health, energy levels and your instructions. Walks are usually on lead for safety, with plenty of time to sniff, explore and take in their surroundings. We also offer supervised garden time throughout the day for toilet breaks, fresh air and gentle play. Alongside exercise, we include calm enrichment such as sniffing games, food puzzles, lick mats, basic training, gentle play, depending on what your dog enjoys and what you are happy with. My own dogs enjoy friendly, gentle play, but we always make sure interactions are supervised and suitable for each dog. Rest is just as important as activity. Your dog will have time and space to settle, nap and decompress in a quiet area, so they do not become overstimulated. We aim to create a safe, balanced day with exercise, enrichment, cuddles, snuggles, reassurance and plenty of calm downtime. Throughout the day, we keep an eye on your dog’s behaviour, appetite, toileting, comfort and general wellbeing, so we can quickly notice if they need anything or if their routine needs adjusting.

Before accepting a booking, I like to understand as much as possible about your dog so we can make sure they will be happy, safe and comfortable in our home. I am always happy to discuss any concerns in advance, including separation anxiety, toileting, nervousness, medical needs, behaviour around other dogs, children or cats, and anything that may help your dog settle. For new bookings, I ask for a meet and greet before their stay. This gives us the chance to meet you and your pooch, answer any questions, and make sure your dog feels comfortable with us. Where appropriate, we can also arrange a home visit so your dog can become familiar with our home, garden, family and pets before their stay begins. I will also ask about your dog’s usual routine, feeding, walks, sleep arrangements, likes, dislikes, triggers and any special requirements, so we can keep their stay as familiar and stress-free as possible.
