Patient sitter for challenging pets
Do you have a feisty feline? Raucous rover? Fearful fido? I love all animals, but I have a big heart for dogs and cats who need a little extra understanding and TLC. I fostered cats and dogs and walked shelter dogs of all ages and breeds for 20 years, in addition to sitting pets independently for several years and having my own cats and dogs my entire life. I am currently on the behavior team of a local rescue, supporting foster families with their more challenging dogs. I have training and experience in fear-free/force-free handling (positive reinforcement) and a good understanding of dog body language. I love getting to know each animal as an individual, with their own preferences and quirks. I also have experience caring for puppies and kittens, as well as senior animals. I am comfortable administering medications, injections and sub-Q fluids. For dogs who prefer to exercise/potty in their own yards, I can spend time playing brain games and doing light training to provide enrichment. If you have a particularly energetic pup, I am also available for longer hikes in local parks.

Safety, trust & environment
Safety is my top priority. For walks, I make sure that the dog has a well-fitting harness and a collar with identification. I typically use a waist belt for larger dogs, so they are attached to me and cannot pull away. Out in the world, we will maintain a safe distance from other dogs at all times. I will want to know if your dog has any history of escaping or bolting when frightened. With both dogs and cats, I am extremely cautious around doors, since I have plenty of experience with escape artists (please let me know if this has been an issue with your pet). I require an initial meet and greet so that I can get to know your pet and their needs.

Allegra is great with dogs! She connected instantly with our older dog and he is so comfortable around her. She even taught him a new trick the first time she met him! In addition to being very sweet with animals, she is also very professional.
Allegra is great! She's a total pro, and it was immediately obvious that she both knows how to handle dogs and loves them very much. Our girl Nagi is both high energy and leash reactive towards other dogs --not the easiest prospect for a walk-- but Allegra managed her with aplomb, and introduced us to a great new walking area that is safe and engaging. Wholeheartedly recommend!

Allegra took great care of our dog Lilly when she needed some extra walks. Lilly is uncertain about new people, especially in her house, but Allegra is good with nervous dogs and Lilly warmed up quickly. Would rebook!
Allegra really loves dogs. She is an incredible dog sitter. I feel very comfortable leaving my dog with her because I know that she will be taken care of as if she were with me. Allegra immediately adapted to the fact my dog likes sniff walks and is not into distance walking. She often stimulates my dog with different types of activities. When my dog is not feeling well, Allegra easily gives her medication and keeps me well informed of the situation. I know my dog is happy with her because she is extremely excited when she comes over !
Allegra cares about the health and wellbeing of animals more than anyone I know. She is kind, considerate, and very knowledgeable about animal's needs, including mental stimulation. I am a pet/housesitter myself and I never hesitate to refer clients to her. Animals always love her!

Schedule
I am transitioning to making pet care my main job, and I'm available most days and times, unless I'm traveling myself. I'm happy to do drop-ins and walks on weekends.
