How much to charge for house sitting with multiple animals and "chores"?

I have a booking request and I have no idea what to charge. Here is what she requested:

Lexi is obedience trained and playful. Also need to take care of chickens, parakeets, house cat, hummingbird feeders, feed catfish in the pond, water house and patio plants and gardens if no rain. Should be organic veggies and fresh eggs to enjoy.

This is over Labor Day weekend so she already gets the holiday rate but what would you charge for all the additional care?

Second question: Can I view the owner's address before booking? I need it for the Meet and Greet or will she need to provide it directly?

Comments

I would just say something along the lines of “just to make sure I have the right address....” or “would you mind sending me you address for the meet and greet so I can make sure I have the correct location” check on other local sitters to see what they charge and talk to the owner about the extras

Hi I'll answer your second question first - you need to ask the owner to provide their address as you won't see it until the booking is accepted by you and then the owner again.

Wow that is a lot of animals to care for but before you can arrive at a reasonable daily rate you need to understand the feeding and care requirements - like how long will it take you to complete them several times a day. However with house sitting you should be planning to stay a significant amount of hours at the house already. I might suggest $60-$65 per day, so discuss pricing at the meet and greet but be willing to accept less. Best of luck

Like Walt,I think that's a huge amount of work and very time-consuming. You only charge $29/night for house sitting. There's no way I would do all those tasks for anything less than $100/night. Of course, I live in a different area, but you have to take into consideration your local market and whether you will be able to take care of other dogs during this time.

Hi- I no longer do housesitting but when I did, I would charge extra per pet- and it sounds like you are going to have a lot of extra animals and tasks/chores that she wants you to complete. I think that you could either:

a) say that you're not comfortable with all of these demands - but ask her which ones are the most important to her and say that you will do those, perhaps remind her that your primary role as a "house sitter" is to take care of the animals, not be a housekeeper...

b) if you choose to offer all of these services, figure out what a reasonable cost is which is fair to you and fair to the owner, I think it is perfectly reasonable to charge extra for multiple tasks and things needed besides taking care of the pets... I also would encourage you to consider taking short breaks when house sitting, which I did when I took car e of animals- that way you don't get burnt out, but can take care of yourself too-whether it go to get a bite to eat, shower, etc and not feel that you are swamped with things that this person is asking you to do- take care of yourself first!

If this is something that you're not comfortable doing- let the owner know that- it's only fair to them and you to figure out whether or not this is a reasonable task for you- but take care of yourself, don't get burnt out by demanding owners.

Good luck!

I would definitely have a M&G prior to deciding on what to charge. Just tell the client that your rate will depend on the amount of work (time) involved to perform all the duties they are asking for. At the M&G get detailed instructions on what they want you to do and how often. I include watering a few plants in my normal house sitting rate, but if they want you to water many plants charge for it.

I charge $45/night for one dog and minimal chores, plus $5 for cat care (up to 3 with minimal duties involved), so in your case $50/night just for the dog and cat. Based on the list you gave of the number of animals and other chores involved, I would charge between $75- $100/night, depending on the amount of time it will take to do the other chores.
