Why does my dog dig holes in my backyard?

Why does my dog dig holes in my backyard?

Dogs dig because its pleasurable and fun Digging is normal.

Dogs also dig holes when they are warm/hot. The dirt is usually much cooler than the air and their instinct is to cool off. . . . Just like in a cave or den. There is also a chance he/she smells a mole or other type of underground creature and is tracking it.

I have a couple diggers that come over on a regular basis and I have found that the two biggest reasons to dig a hole at least in my yard when we're outside playing is either to get cool and those are normally holes the size of a body. LOL Or what I call ankle breakers and those holes are digging for moles or whatever animal is there, was there, or imagined that was there. ( and those normally come from terriers breeds the great hunters) In my experience as long as the dogs are kept occupied and other stimulation The digging out of boredom is almost nonexistent. Unless of course you have that one dog that digging is their favorite past time and then I find that making sure they're well supervised and have lots of interaction that can normally be only a small concern.

He is probably very bored. Try giving him some fun activities to do. Toys etc. Take him for long walks before you leave him for the day. This will help keep his mind occupied.

I recently had a new boarding dog dig in my fern garden. His owner had mentioned in the meet and greet that he was starting to dig in their yard. After 2 attempts and me saying leave it! He stopped. About 30 minute later, he quietly dug a flat bed to nap in rich shady soil as the temp hit 101!
