Dog I am sitting attacked my dog - what do I do?

The dog I am sitting attacked my dog. He took a bite out of his right ear and nicked his left ear, leg, and toes. The bleeding was uncontrollable because he nicked an artery and my dog has lost a chunk of his hear for the rest of his life.

I called rover support/helpline immediately after the incident and informed the owner. Am I allowed to as for payment of the vet bills? It seems like the least they could do, especially since I didn't make him come home early from vacation to pick up the dog.

I believe the bill is covered by Rover after you meet a $500 deductible. That isn't bad considering an emergency vet bill can cost you $1-$2k. Geesh.

Thank you!

How awful! I'm glad the owners offered to pay the vet bills but what a horrible experience for you and your poor dog.
I'm also glad to know that it's covered by Rover (once you meet the deductible). Just curious, why did you decide to continue the stay? Do you trust the dog for the rest of the trip? I'm not sure what I would do. I hope your poor dog feels better soon!

There was only 1.5 days left in his stay. I was tempted to ask the owner to pick up the dog, but I knew he was out of town and didn't have many options. Also this happened at night.

Wow, I'm so sorry that happened! I've had this happen to my dog as well, so I know how traumatizing it can be.

Obviously I would keep the dog separate from any other dogs for the rest of the stay. But also, I would consider what may have caused the fight. Do you have bones or toys available to the dogs? If so, maybe consider making a "bones and toys in crates only" rule. I would also be sure to ask owners if their dogs have ever shown any resource guarding behaviors.

I hope everything works out!

No bones or toys. They were excited I had just walked into the door and Winston must have gotten too close to her and she snapped. No other aggression was shown on her part.

We were watching a dog that did the same exact thing to our dog. Everyone was so excited we were home, they got into an altercation. Nothing too, too crazy, but it was simple and it happened.

You can ask the owners when they come to get their dog. What did the owner tell you at the m&g about the dogs' aggression? Depending on the law in your State/County/City, the owner "may" be liable but wait until he gets home to see if he offers or agrees to pay.

Just curious, what did Rover tell you about the insurance coverage on your dog? I know there is a $500 out of pocke deductible. Will Rover assist?

He just sent me a message checking on my dog and offered to pay which helps. But still traumatic. Rover did inform me but it didn't quite hit the $500 mark.

So glad he was concerned & offered to pay and do take it. How is your pup doing?

He is doing well. He is a trouper. He's continuing his medicine. Other than the traumatic experience and a little bit of his ear missing he will be fine.
