The Most Romantic Dog Names Ever

Getting a Dog
By Kiki Kane

Share501Tweet0Pin It40

Love is in the air at Rover HQ. Tiny bluebirds of happiness are buzzing around the office, whispering sweet nothings into our ears and chasing the office dogs in circles.

One sweet nothing in particular: the idea to pour through Rover’s extensive data on dog names searching out the most romantic dog names we could find. We also highlighted the sweetest and most sentimental names in our data. Read on to see how many of our pets have some of the most romantic dog names around!

The Top Canine Couple Names

We’ve applied our matchmaking skills to our extensive database of dog names to come up with these romantic dog name pairings, ranked by overall popularity. The name rankings come from our national dog name data. The numbers after the names represent their ranking from 1 (most popular) to 600 (least common).

Simba (56) and Nala (20)

These regal Disney names of Lion King fame are by far the most popular in this list.

Mickey (96) and Minnie (59)

Can you believe Mickey and Minnie have been together for 87 years?

Lucy (2) and Ricky (256)

Lucy and Ricky Ricardo were the stars of I Love Lucy for nine years, as well as a real-life couple (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, of course.

Fred (193) and Ginger (26)

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers = dancing perfection. Their names will always be associated together.

Romeo (66) and Juliet (379)

“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” The doomed love of teen heartthrob Romeo and his fair Juliet has been wrenching hearts since 1597.

Harry (180) and Sally (116)

When Harry Met Sally was released in the ’80s but still looms large in our cultural memory. Vintage Meg Ryan is just so fabulous!

Frida (317) and Diego (137)

These iconic Mexican artists are almost as well-known for their fiery relationship as for their masterpieces.

Napoleon (396) and Josephine (83)

Napoleon and Josephine’s love may not have lasted a lifetime but their love letters are a lasting tribute to the fire they shared. Not as many dogs are named the full Josephine as they are named Josie—so we went ahead and combined the two!

Tara (492) and Willow (54)

This nostalgic TV couple of Buffy the Vampire Slayer sports a couple of fabulous names.

Princess Buttercup (215) and Wesley (375)

A romance of unusual size, Buttercup and Westley suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune (and the fireswamp) to reunite. As you wish.

Leeloo (567) and Korben Dallas (176)

Leeloo quite literally falls into the arms/taxi of Korben who can’t help falling in love with her supreme being-ness in the ’90s hit The Fifth Element. Note that our database doesn’t have any dogs named Korben, but plenty named Dallas!

Beauty (529) and the Beast (721)

A tale as old as time, the love between bookworm Belle and the boorish Beast is one for the ages. Beauty is not as a common a dog name as Belle or Bella, as it turns out—but it still ranks in the top 1000.

Nick (577) and Nora (248)

Nick and Nora Charles from the classic Thin Man films were a dog-owning pair, too, with a wire-haired fox terrier named Asta.

William (788) and Kate (616)

Whether or not the royal couple inspired these dog names, we don’t know, but aren’t they distinguished?

Boris (488) and Natasha (809)

The…explosive passion of Boris and Natasha is the greatest love story of all Pottsylvania, dahlink.

Hamlet (946) and Ophelia (539)

These two tragic figures from literature make for some regally-named dogs.

The Top 4 Doggy Bromances

Since we’re in the matchmaking mood, we pored over the database to discover some long-lost friends! These duos have a true bond.

Maverick (72) and Goose (293)

Have you lost that lovin’ feeling? These handsome Top Guns top the bromance charts and would love to do a flyby of your tower anytime.

Scooby-Doo (119) and Shaggy (559)

These cartoon scaredy cats are friends to the very end. And they’ll do just about anything for a couple of Scooby Snax! We found quite a few Scoobys and Shaggys in the Rover database.

Sherlock (366) and Watson (159)

The consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his esteemed sidekick Dr. John Watson have inspired several pet parents to give their dogs these monikers.

Bert (770) and Ernie (290)

These best friends from Sesame Street have been charming children for ages, and their names sound pretty cute on dogs.
