Although dog crates are often associated with crate training, they also provide a cozy space for your pet to retreat to, as well as a safe form of transportation in a car. If you have a big dog, you’ll want to get a crate where they can fit comfortably. These six well-reviewed crates for generously-sized dogs come in a variety of styles and at various price points.
Before shopping for a big dog crate, it’s important to know your dog’s measurements, including width, length, and height—in addition to weight. The right Great Dane crate may be too big for your Lab mix, for instance.
Ideally, a large dog’s crate should be tall enough to allow your dog to fully stand up, wide enough for your dog to turn around in, and long enough to let her fully stretch out. Crates for big dogs can vary greatly from one manufacturer to another, so double-check dimensions before purchase.
After you know what size of big dog crate to look for, you’ll also want to consider the style and material. Retailers sell a variety of crates for large dogs in plastic, metal, and wood, and each material has its pros and cons.
For instance, metal wire crates are great for strong dogs who can chew their way through anything, but they tend to be heavy and hard to move—especially when they are large or oversized for big dogs. Meanwhile, plastic crates are generally affordable and ideal for use in cars, but typically offer less ventilation. Dog crate furniture that’s made out of wood is certainly the most attractive of all the styles, but it comes at a higher cost, is not collapsible, and is not a good fit for chewers.
With that said, take a look at some of the best dog crates we’ve found for large dogs. Whether you have a 50-pound pittie or a 100-pound Great Dane, there’s certain to be a dog crate on our list that will fit your needs.

Helpful Review: “My 100 pound Lab mix loves it. It is plenty big enough for him to lay in it with the door closed. The divider was useful when he was a pup for restricting how much room he had while training. It will collapse to about 4 inches tall. The double door crate has one door on end and a second door on the side. [It’s a] very good quality.”Shop on Amazon
Not only do New Age Pet dog crates come in several colors, but they’re made with non-toxic plastic that’s more durable than wood. According to the manufacturer, this crate is best-suited for an already crate-trained dog. It comes in large and extra large sizes and can accommodate dogs up to 80 pounds.
Helpful Review: “This crate is perfect for my dog. She is a 2 year old pit mix and loves it for sleeping. It is easy to put together and looks nice as well. The cat likes to hang out in it when the dog is away. ;) As a note, this is NOT for a dog who is not already crate trained. It will not stand up to high levels of scratching or chewing. Train your dog in a more durable crate and then transition to this one. I use the wire mesh fold-down crate I trained her in for travel and for training other dogs.”Shop on Chewy
This RuffMaxx crate is one of the more popular dog crates available at Walmart. It’s sized for dogs 50 to 70 pounds and can be used for both home and travel. It’s made from a sturdy plastic material and is said to be super-easy to assemble.
Helpful Review: “I was worried that the camo would be too much but it is very subdued. Easy to put together but sturdy. I wanted a door that couldn’t be bent by my pit bull. The door closes secure with a latch that goes in both the top and bottom of the body of the kennel. No way can the dog get out or bend the door. My dog is about 55# and she has plenty of room to turn around. Would definitely buy again should the need arise.”Shop at Walmart

Helpful Review: “Bought this crate for temporary crating and for dog shows. The crate is light and packs down really easily and nicely. I love the extra storage and the three doors. Lots of mesh for breath ability. One of the more expensive options but I would buy again. My 60lb flat-coated retriever fits nicely in the 36 inch size.”Shop on Chewy

Helpful Review: “Our dog had severe anxiety and would destroy anything and everything In The house. We tried a regular crate with wires and she was out in less than a minute. Our little escape artist! We were so anxious ourselves to come home and find the house destroyed. Thankfully, this has been a life saver. She doesn’t even try to get out. She goes in it on her own, and when we are home, she lays in it. Worth every cent and would highly recommend!”Shop on Chewy
